Damon Clear Brackets Size

#1 Post by weakjawmcgraw »

So, today was the day! I finally got my braces. My orthodontist recommended Damon braces for adults (23 y/o), and I could choose between the full metal or top clear. I chose the top 6 clear because I thought it would be the best aesthetic choice. Prior to braces, I had lip incompetence and a mentalis strain (aka hard to close my lips!!). I knew braces would maybe make it a little bit more difficult; however, I feel I made the wrong decision going with Damon clear. It feels like they’re bigger than my other brackets and making it very difficult to close my mouth because they’re protruding so much. Is this something I would run into with the metal ones anyways or is it noticeably more pronounced with the Damon Clear?? :/

The clear brackets (I have them on the "social six" as well) are definitely larger than the metal. I have some minor lip incompetence now, in braces, that I never had before. I am assuming that once the brackets are removed, it will resolve.

I am still happy with the decision to go clear on top. Looks so much better (nearly unnoticeable) in photos. :D

Yup, the Damon Clears are much bigger than the metal ones. I was concerned about my top lip not being able to cover them so I was planning on all metal, but my doc talked me into the clear ones on top. She said all her adult patients went with clear top brackets. Metal on the bottom was required in my case. Initially I regreted not sticking to my all metal plan, the clear ones seemed huge and sure enough I could not close my lips. After about three months I got used to them and finally could close my lips. Not sure what I would do if I had a “do over”.
Lower braces on March 11, 2015, upper braces added July 14, 2015.
Damon, metal bottom / clear top.
Braces off March 26, 2018: Total time in braces: 3 years, 2 weeks and 1 day.
Hawley retainers top and bottom.

My ortho also mentioned that most adults get the clear top brackets! (As I said, I had no idea that they were bigger.) So, are you happy with the clear brackets? Right now, it's also difficult to get my top lip over the clear ones, and it's really hurting my self-esteem more than I thought. I'm hoping that in a few months, I'll be able to close my lips without too much strain also.

I also had four extractions (my 2nd premolars on the top and my 1st premolars on the bottom), so I'm wondering if, after the gaps are closed, it might be easier to close my lips then? :/
