5 days in, 5 lbs. lost

#1 Post by imagirlgeek »

Hi! I'm new to the whole braces thing, and stumbled onto this site while trying to figure out how to function for the next several months. I went with the 6 month smile option, and for some dumb reason I thought this would be a relatively easy way to uncrowd my front teeth. In reality, I'm finding it impossible to eat. It's not the braces that are the problem...it's the bumpers(?) on my back teeth that don't allow any of my other teeth to meet, so no chewing. Seriously, I almost choked on scrambled eggs! haha To complicate things even more, I am also on a low carb diet, so I'm used to eating mostly meat and lightly steamed veggies. Right now I'm basically living on sugar-free protein shakes and sugar-free jello. Going to try salmon tonight, but if anyone has any low carb suggestions I sure would appreciate it!

So thankful for this community! Just reading through some of the posts saved me from yelling at my dentist and getting it all taken out. :-)

So I know this is weird, but I have never liked potatoes. Even before the diet. They smell delicious, and baked potatoes look so good, but every time I've tried them they taste the way dirt smells. I may try to do porridge...I mean, loading up on carbs in the morning would give me the opportunity to burn them off through the day (ugh, exercise), but I'm trying to stay away from sugars/carbs so I don't go back to those eating habits.

Try tofu or soft boiled eggs? They are protein rich so will keep you full.

Good call. I've never had tofu before. I did try scrambled eggs the 1st night that was mostly a failure, but I am getting more comfortable with all the hardware so eggs may be easier now.

If you have Vitamix, you can blend anything you like, do cream of chicken or broccoli soup.
In health food sections in grocery stores you can try to find almond butter, cashew butter, pumpkin seeds butter same consistency as peanut butter, there is protein and a lot of calories, you can also drink meal replacement like Ensure, but that be with carbs.

Thank you! I do have a blender but never considered blending meat. Blended broccoli sounds really good though...broccoli is my favorite! And I've heard of almond butter, but not the others. I will look for them.

Also, just forgot to mention- you can do baba ghanoush and hummus in blender, with more liquid parts it will be thinner and easy to swallow. Strain Greek yogurt for about 24 hours through the cheesecloth (It is called labneh), than blend it with smoked salmon, it is a very tasty spread but could be eaten without bread or toasts.Red lentil soup cooked for about an hour doesn't require any chewing. Or you can easily make home cottage cheese , bring to boil 2 parts of milk and ad 1 part of room temperature buttermilk,
Let it stay for 10 minutes, than let strain through the cheesecloth for 20min. It does require some chewing, but with time you should probably be able to do that.
