Gum swelling after adjustment
I had my first adjustment and they put a thicker wire on my top teeth where they are trying to close a gap in my front two teeth. Since then the tooth they wanted to move in order to close the gap is surrounded by swollen gum, and there is swelling in the gum between the two teeth. I use a waterpik and sonicare toothbrush and brush 3x/day, sometimes 4, in addition to using ACT mouthwash, so I know that it is not my dental hygiene. Has this happened to anyone previously? Will it go away? Thank you :)

Re: Gum swelling after adjustment
My orthodontist said an interesting thing about inflammation the last time that I saw her. She said feel free to take anti-inflammatories, such as ibuprofin, but be aware that they might slow down progress if relied upon too heavily. Apparently swelling is just part of the process and interfering with it can slow down teeth movement. I'm not sure how common her school of thought is or how major of an issue it is, but it was an interesting thing that I'd heard for the first time.

My gum swelled up recently and was sore, but I am near the end of my brace time. I think it was due to moving one particular stubborn tooth, I just brushed it very gently and flossed and it seems to have calmed down now
