Bad Bite Causing Tightness in the Jaw?

#1 Post by Scott19 »

For about 2 years now my jaw has been getting tighter and tighter, i do know that i grind at night really bad (i sometimes use gauze to stop the grinding of my teeth) So i just recently had braces put in and am having Upper Jaw surgery to correct the bite as the top jaw is too short.

What im wondering is, Why is the tightness in my jaw causing very annoying pain. It's more or less depressing really. Is the surgery a solution to my problem? i asked the oral surgeon if i had TMJ and simply said no and that my bite needs moved forward for my jaw fit. any help as to whether this is true or not would be appreciated..thanks

bad bite and jaw

#2 Post by Joanne »

I've had braces since last December. I'll be getting upper and lower jaw surgery next year for an open bite, overjet and crossbite, and I know my bite has been changing. I also know that my bite position is being changed into that which I'll have for after the surgery (which will mess things up with my bite the way my jaw is now). I'm now chewing up the inside of my cheeks where there used to be lower teeth.
I do grind at night, which puts a strain on my jaw, but I also have a deteriorated tmj joint, which will be reinforced with screws during the surgery.
I wish I had a definitive answer, but I am trusting that my situation will improve.
Hope this was of some help.
