Drinking and Eating

#1 Post by diehard »

I only have 1 week to go before I get my first tray Iam confused about eating and drinking for instance if I eat 4 times a day does this mean 4 brushes Iam not sure if you can brush your teeth too much but everything in life has a limit. Secondly how do I cope drink wise I dont drink tea or coffee (iam guessing coffee is the worst) but my vice is cordial (vimpto and beer, do i have to drink water all day now I dont think I could start a cold day on cold water. (could i drink clear sugar free drink)??

yea, before i got invisalign, i'd eat...... 8 times a day? because i snack a LOT. so since i didn't want to brush 8x/day, i end up just eating a LOT all at once 2-3 times a day so that i wont get hungry later. i'v heard of people keeping to their original # of meals per day. also, im using asoft toothbrush and fluoride-free toothpaste maybe its better on the teeth.
i got really sad about the drinking thing too cuz i want my tea/hot chocolate during winter. my dentist said water. i asked him if it can be something clear? he said no because then it will still get in the invisalign and onto your teeth. but im guessing if its sugar free and clear, it should be fine? o, but nothing hot. so now when i drink water, i drink it warm... then i asked about mints. the girl who works there who also has invisalign said she still buys sugar free mints. so i did that too. so im guessing if ur drinking something that's clear and sugar free it should be fine. but im no dentist.

new to the board. I just got my first set today, I have not gotten those invisible brackets yet, just got spacers and this first set to get used to them. I will get them fully on next week. Question though, I am a frat boy as you know and I love drinking on weekends, probably twice a week. Do you guys recommend me taking them off and drinking and catching up on the lost hours on an extra day of wearing them, or should I drink with them on?? anyone with this experience, thanks.
BTW do they hurt more as they put spacer and make u wear the aligners??? cuase right now my spacer is pushing the aligner down so I am not getting the full effect until the brackets are installed.

I havent had any problems enjoying my coffee. It takes me about 15 minutes to drink my coffee in the morning. I take my invisilign out, drink my coffee, brush my teeth and clean my trays and put them back in. No problem. I eat 3-4 times a day and brush my teeth everytime, and brush my invisilign everytime. Yuck - you dont want to put you nasty trays in your mouth w/o brushing them. At night during dinner I put my invisilign in Efferdent to soak them and clean them and take the nasty smell and any discoloration (if any) from them. Efferdent (I found), works great! Make sure you use dental floss everytime also! My teeth have become whiter, because of the brushing four times a day. I drink water with my invisilign on, but take them off when I drink my soda and rinse my mouth out afterwards. No biggy. You really get used to the routine after while.
I went to the dentist last week - he filed two of my lower teeth skinner. OWWW! It hurt my jaw from all the pressure. But now it is easier to floss and my teeth have more room to move. He is filing two more teeth next visit. I noticed also, my upper teeth have moved a lot and I noticed in between where my teeth were crowded there is a drastic color difference. Much more whiter. I will have to get laser whitening done when I am finished with invisilign.

Does filing hurt

#7 Post by nvrsaynvr »

To answer your filing question. When the doctor filed my teeth thinner (vertically), it only hurt my jaw, because of the pressure. I didnt hurt my teeth. Not big pain, just major ache in my jaw because I had to open my mouth so wide. When he filed horizontal, to shorten my teeth ~ that didnt hurt at all.
I started my seventh tray. Half way done with my upper teeth. Major pain on one tooth on my bottom teeth. I looked at my 8th tray and my teeth will be totally straight. I just have to get this one tooth that is killing me to straighten out. So, I guess that is what this 7th tray is doing now- moving that one tooth. So... in three weeks, my teeth should be straight.
That was REALLY fast!!
My upper teeth are/and have been always straight, the dr is just making my smile wider. For example - take you thumb and index finger and make a "V". This is what my smile looked like when I started invisalign. Now take your index and thumb and make a "C", this is what my smile will look like when I am done.
Now - my bottom teeth are very crowded, but almost straight now. I am only on my 21 week into treatment and my teeth are straight!!!

i got really pissed off at my dentist because when i was getting my first set, he had to file 2 of my posterior teeth and he kept getting my gums. at first i thought it was just me til i got home and brushed my teeth, put in my liners, and saw that blood was flowin into the liners. sooooo if u feel paper-cut pain, tel your dentist to be more gentle because he/she's probably getting into your gums..

finally the day came and I got my teeth filed. I was only two and it wasn't bad at all, I just didn't like the sanding feeling.
I really found it obnoxious when he was sanding off the exess glue of the attachments, i really hate the drilling feeling I get. I still have to get some attachments changed 6 weeks from now, but thats the process I guess. I just found out my treatment is so long, I read the aligner tags and it says 1 out of 45.

I'm not wearing Invisalign but the brushing thing is the same with wire braces, and like the poster above I find that I snack less because of it.

My recommendation is to get a super-soft toothbrush for the midday cleans.

And whenever you can, to drink through a straw avoiding as much of your mouth as possible. I even do this with some hot drinks - once they cool a bit, it's fine - though admittedly not always as nice as the regular "open mouth" way ;)

is it a usa thing or is it just me iam in uk and have had 4 teeth extracted but most people who have invisalign keep talking about filing and not extractions why is that i was under the impression you have to make as much room as possible to create the best result, i can sacrifice 4 teeth i dont miss them a bit, that said im keeping them as battle shrapnel :D

To NSolano - I have had invisalign since May, I too go to university and drink everything - wine, beer, any type of mixed drinks, shots - I figure for those few hours it really isn't such a big deal. When I go home I brush them out - I also have mints all the time.

so you are saying that I can drink on weekends and just make sure I take them off when I am going to bed and brush them.
Have you gotten any cavities since you got the aligners since the drinks that you take are staying around your teeth longer?

NSolano - yes that's what I mean. All teeth are different but I have not gotten a cavity since I have had invisalign. Personally, I don't think I'd care if I got a cavity or two during this whole process - it is better to make sure that you are wearing the aligners long enough.
