Got braced - new to the board

#1 Post by johnnya »

Got mine this morning! I'm 29 and decided to do something about my overbite and three crowded teeth. The worst part was putting them on! It took 40 minutes or so.. I may have one tooth extracted later on..right now the archwire isn't looking very straight and I can't stop touching it with my tongue..

My biggest concern is the eating..how do you do it?

Hi!! Image

Hey congrats to your braces!!

Oh well eating... The first few days I had only soup, yoghurt and mashed potatos. The following 4 weeks I could eat semihard food like minced meat and rice. After 6 weeks now I can eat everything besindes chewy things like steak or hard things like nuts.

Just give it time! The brain is an amazing thing. Redundant Information is being eliminated over time. Getting braces is like getting glasses. First they are annoying and always on your mind but after a few weeks you forget that they are there.

My braces feel like a part of me now, just like my teeth are. If I don't think about them they simply don't exist.

It's unbelievable in the beginning but it will happen to you too.

Congrats on your braces Johnnya! I have had my braces for about 2.5 weeks and now they are causing me no trouble at all... (i would have never thought they would feel normal...but they do) The first 2 days of braces I ate soups and soft foods, but I was so hungry! By the 3rd day I was eating hamburgers by tearing a bite off at a time. Good Luck!

Congratulations on getting your braces and WElcome to the board! :-1

For the first couple of days after getting braces I only had soft things like soup, mashed potatoes, drinks, yogurt, and more soup! :) It does get better though I promise! Just don't try anything hard or chewy for a little while.

I still run my tongue over my braces a lot and sometimes they still feel foreign but most of the time I forget they're there! :)

Good luck and keep us posted!

Welcome johnnya! Eating is definately interesting at the start of this journey. There are lots of suggestions for food (what is good or difficult to eat) on this board, so I would suggest that you have a browse around to pick up lots of info.

Good luck with the treatment

Eating has improved. Still can't bite anything remotely hard, but chewing is better.
I'm getting used to the metal, but find it annoying.
Yesterday all my teeth were hurting, but today it got much better. I guess there's some work going on there!

My next appointment is scheduled for February 2nd, so I hope to have some progress by that time..

Small update

#9 Post by johnnya »

Today everything went fine.. No pain, no loose teeth, no trouble eating. No one has noticed my braces either.. It's all confusing to me.
Oh well.. No movement yet of course.

Update

#10 Post by johnnya »

One of my upper molars hurts today.. Any clues why?
I also have large gap between two bottom teeth - don't know why. The two front teeth are now very tight together. That's the only change so far!

Yay! I'm finally pain free.

It's so odd. My bottom teeth are moving like crazy, even though they look good to me. It's the uppers where I have crowding - and nothing happens there!

First adjustment!

#12 Post by johnnya »

Well, not really. But my ortho did a small adjustment in my upper jaw where I had movement.

We compared pics and there was tons of movement I didn't noticed at home.
Just told me that I must floss better...which isn't easy! I promised to better next time.. :)
