Newly braced!

#1 Post by tinny teacher »

Hi everyone! Your message boards have helped get me through the first days of my new braces - thank you! :D

I never thought I would get braces, my teeth were crooked, but they had so much personality to them - it never bothered me. That is, until I got my wedding photos. The close up shots of my husband and I are in a box in the closet! Afterwards, I pondered with the idea of braces and 1 year later I decided to dive in.

I have a wonderful ortho who's staff is also wonderful and kind. They actually cater to children (many of my friends went there as children), but they are trustworthy and have been around for decades.

From September - February, I was (un)fortunate to sport palatal expanders. I couldn't talk for a week, let alone eat. The worst part is, I teach 2nd graders and teaching phonics while sounding like Elmer Fud is impossible. After a week, I was able to compensate and sounded just fine.

Now it's February and I had my top expander taken out and my top metal brackets and wire put on. Instead of 26, I look like I'm 16! I was afraid of how I would look, but it's not so bad. I also got a little surprise thrown in for good fun. I had to have an arch put behind my teeth to act as an anchor while my teeth are pulled back into position. Not so bad, I thought, until it actually was placed into my mouth! It has an acrylic "pad" that is digging into the roof of my mouth and it's so thick that I once again sound like Elmer Fud. I'm not sure my tongue will be able to compensate this time because of the thickness of the acrylic, there's no where for it to go. My students are darling and tell me it's okay, I'll learn how to talk again. I hope so, I can't teach sounding like this. I'll give it a week and if my speech has not improved I'll ask my ortho for a thinner replacement. I don't want to be a complainer, but I need to talk!

So that's my story. Any suggestions on a good floss for braces?

Congratulations on getting your braces. You will get used to them soon enough ;)

I use regular floss as I find it easier to manage...but I think I'm the only one lol. A lot of people and orthos recommend floss with a stick end as it's easier to pass through the wire...there are also floss threaders that can help you... At first it will take you a while to floss....but you will get the gang of it so don't get discouraged. I think I was flossing for about 20 minutes in the beginning...it was also painful. Now I probably finish flossing in less that 8 minutes.

I am really glad you are liking your ortho and staff. A lot of people on here seem to have communication problems with the assistants and it really is unfortunate because liking the ortho and staff really does make a difference.

Hey,

Congrats on getting braces. Mine are going on Thursday morning. People already think that I look young, but I can not imagine what it is going to be like after getting braces. Did you say that you have all metal brackets? That is what I am getting, I guess they are better than the ceramics.

Keep in touch

lol...i know how you feel!!! I'm actually only 18, but people have always thought that I'm older than I am, like in my 20's, or that I'm older than my big sister, but now???? I look(and actually feel) like I'm 13 again! It's like gosh!!!! nooo!!!)
I actually just got my braces on Friday, and while I have the special Super floss-I'm not using it yet! My mouth is so sore that I can barely even touch them with my tongue or brush them without going "ouch!"-So i think I'll start flossing once I can actually brush! lol
I have the whole "elmer Fud" thing going on as well-actually, it's made my speech stumble a little bit, and i actually spit when I talk on occasion too!

Ah well...good luck!

Welcome tinny teacher and congrats for decided to do something to better your teeth! I've been thinking about going into teaching and wanted to fix my teeth before I decided to go into it!!

As far as flossing, I say forget the floss and get a Waterpik. I'm too lazy to floss!
