This post finally helped me figure out why I seemed to be "at odds" with the general opinion here. It hit me when I saw flowertowngal's great closing to her post - "Straight teeth - priceless". The light bulb went off - straight, white teeth simply aren't a priority for me as I think they are for most people here. The tally begins:

root canal first molar (and crown) - $1,100
root canal on same tooth 3 yrs. later - $1,300
extraction same tooth due to root fracture - $300 (multiple appts)
scheduled implant same tooth area - $2,000 (unless I can get the OS to extract the 2nd molar, too, so I get rid of the "hole" from extraction. This would be my choice, but not going to happen.)

Just on tooth 30, I will have spent $4,700 alone.

The tally continues:

TMJ splints to realign jaw (bad idea) - $3,750
Braces to really realign bite (only for functional reasons, believe me) $5,900
Extraction of incisor for braces - $200
Untold hundreds in doo-dads- $500
Untold hundreds for cleanings...

Totals a little over $15,000 - no insurance. If money weren't an issue, maybe I'd prioritize differently, but my passions are different, and for me, as long as my teeth are baseline healthy and functional, I'm perfectly OK whether they are straight, gapped, crowded or any variation thereof. To me the whole ortho thing is a business transaction, not a relationship, as I guess others see it, so what I expect of an ortho may be different than others and how I approach ortho may be different too. Different strokes for different folks.

I hope the forum remains a place where people can have braces-speak whether the perfect smile is within their reach or just within a dream.

I like that flowertowngal!

SO far my braces were $4850 and I had a gum lift prior to being braced that cost $2500. Luckily my ortho office gives me toothbrushes, proxy brushes, wax, toothpaste, and floss at every single adjustment!!! I love it!

Iv had two ortho's

first ortho consultation fee £60 paid
next appointment would of cost me £80 not paid
then the braces would of cost me £2900 not paid
and then retainer fee unknown as i did a runner
to much money and could not afford the bill.

moved house so i tried again at a different place

consultation plus x-rays £ free :D
3 teeth extractions nhs £ around 25
clear braces and retainer £2000

so it pays to look around and try and get a free consultation

im 21 so too old for nhs ortho treament plus i have no cover so all my own money. but well worth it.

So far I have spent $1600 on my dental work. Fillings, extractions, cleanings, etc.. My braces are $3800, the expander is $600, and I expect to pay an additional $600 in the next couple years on products. Altogether I'm gonna spend about $6600 on my teeth! And I'm telling you they better look great, lol.

My total will be $5500. Today I was in seeing my ortho and it was suggested that I get whitening after they come off next week. My parents had their teeth whitened by this guy and it was $300! So I asked how much I would need to pay to get it done and he said he wouldn't charge me a penny! AWESOME!
