My ortho has me take my elastics out for eating and cleaning only. I wear heavy elastics, so I can't open my mouth wide enough to eat with them in, except I have found I can slip in a square of Hershey's chocolate and suck on it until it melts!
Since I am very diligent about disposing of my elastics, I think I must have a mouse! I find piles of elastics in the most unlikely places.

Try the neon color ones! It's much harder to lose bright orange, green, grape or berry elastics.
Also, I don't necessarily remove them every single time I eat something. And a water pik works fine with them in. So I lose less of them.
I lose the most when fishing the new ones out of the packet. They stick together and go flying when I separate them.
I just don't worry too much about it. This too shall pass.

Talk about stray elastics ... I feel this way about bits of wax !!! I use wax almost every night on certain sections of my braces. I feel like I'm careful to dispose of it properly when I remove it, and yet I find globs stuck to my bathroom floor, with other remnant globs all over the place caused no doubt by me stepping on the primary glob. One time I found an ortho-sil slick on the bottom of a teacup saucer and I had a heck of a time getting it off !!! Nothing I had on hand would dissolve the stuff ! I won't even use ortho-sil any more, I just use boxing wax, it's not as slimy as ortho-sil.

I'm so glad to hear I'm not the only one with elastics that wander around. I guess they grow legs and scurry around.
I take my elastics out only to brush and replace them with new ones after every meal.

What a great hint. I'll be looking for a pill case in the next few days. I've also thought of a compact folding compact.
On a side note, Higgy, good luck on your surgical appointment.
