Most studies are now showing occlusion (bite) does not have a primary role in TMD, but may play a secondary role. The brochure is put together well.

My regular dentist fitted me for a split earlier in the summer but told me it was going to be a "bandaid" only because I needed braces to fix the TMJ, or at least reduce it. The split helped, even though I had to wear it all day long, but the braces have done so much more. My dentist was fairly certain about the braces and a consult was even suggested when I first started seeing my dentist, however I didn't get the braces for almost a year later. Now when I see my dentist or go into the office, everyone who knows me and or has worked on me (just getting my teeth cleaned or filled in the past required extra time and special arrangements at the office) is curious how the braces are working out for me. It is a small office My dentist was very happy to find out I got the braces and is confident in the ortho I chose.beth1966 wrote:purpleteeth wrote:The braces have been a miracle for me, as I was in a split that I wore all day long (could not keep it in at night... kept on spitting it out) and it was custom made by my dentist. My migraine headaches have gone down by 75%, as I was having one almost everyday, and my migraines were so severe I was getting dibilating double vision. Since a few weeks after getting braces, my double vision and migraines have reduced signficantly. I still have both, but I can at least tolerate them... instead of having to wear an eye patch and being sick everyday.
I'm curious - why do you think this is? Is it because your bite was moved THAT quickly after treatment began? I have had all the same symptoms you have had in the past - but most docs I consulted with said I needed to be pain free before orthodontia - which I am and have been for 6 months.
I don't plan to return to any of the TMJ docs I saw prior - as none of them helped me anyway. I will continue to be see by my ortho to watch my bite after treatment is complete, which makes sense to me.
THks for response.
My ortho originally was going to just put me in top braces and a bottom split and somehow do something to get me out of immediate pain. I think he said he was going to put rubber bands or something on a lower split and then brace my top or something - but it would take about 3months longer. I asked him if he could just brace me all at once and he said yes, but the pain would take a little while to go away. I didn't really listen much to his explanation of how the pain would go away immediately, but he seemed confident. I also was concerned with braces time, so I opted for the full braces at once. He warned me of some pain in the beginning and with the TMJ, but to just give it time.
I know my TMJ is caused a lot by my messed up bite. I have a cross bite and missing molars on top and bottom on just the right side of my mouth. I had bite planes put in to keep my teeth off each other and cross bite elastics and I noticed that within 3 weeks, my TMJ problems reduced significantly. I was also someone who would constantly crack the jaw, pop the jaw, and extend the jaw in funny ways throughout the day. Talking would cause my jaw to crack, but with the elastics in -- that restricted my movement and my popping stopped almost immediately. The elastics actually reduced pressure on my jaw and helped it relax, so to speak.
