Do not worry my fellow pony princess, I am sure there must be some prince with mashed carrots around.

I am also banded shut for 6 weeks and have all liquid diet. I asked my ortho if I could eat something soft like overcooked pasta when I am de-banded before cleaning my teeth, she stared at me like I said something totally silly and then said "Well, yes, you can eat well mashed stuff, but not often" and then said I am to be debanded for about 10 to 15 minutes every day when I can clean my teeth and "exercise" my jaw. I can open to about 1 cm when debanded...
Seriously, this all sucks, lol.

On the other hand, I enjoy being away from work for as long as I am banded shut, because I can not work as a legal secretary as long as I can not speak properly again.

Anyway, when this all is over, shall we do a carrot party?

Yes, a carrot (and opium) party sounds lovely.

I know allll about the bizarre looks from surgeons and orthos. It makes me feel like Rose from the Golden Girls. Yah know, back in St. Olaf....

I had the fourth appt. He took me to ::takes deep dramatic breath and over enunciates:: "THE FORBIDDEN ROOM". Actually it was a basic med room where he does his in house torture. The chair had two sets of leather straps on both arms. That should have been the first indicator that A. A torizene drip was in my near future and B. panic, fight, and flight was my best option. But there was otherworldly window in the room filled with memorizing shapes and colours. Damn you TV!

He took all the bands off complimenting my hygiene. Told me I should trott over to my ortho's office right away and show off his wor.... my jaw. I silently cursed to myself as one of the back bands was velcro peeled off of my gum line (think duct tape over chapped lips). He put on the two side bands and then had me open and close. It felt way too loose. He ended up putting on two more bands on the front in triangles, and told me to call him if my bite changed. He does nice work.

Ok- now my teeth HURT like @$^@# which I was expecting, and my bite feels awkward. It also feels different than yesterday. When I lean my head slightly back like how I was in the chair when he set it up the bite feels normal but any movement and it's different. The back teeth feel lined up but the front feel like a travesty. I'm not sure if I should call him, because honestly I don't have a very clear idea of where it's supposed to be. Also, I think that practicing my bite will help it stabilize. I'm not used to it. It feels funky but when I look at it, it's a matter of tiny tiny proportions. I can keep it lined up but it naturally wants to move slightly forward and to the left. If it still doesn't feel exactly right by Sunday, or like it's setting I'll get a Monday check up appt.

Did I mention that it hurts? Yes? Well I'll mention it again. It's a 800mg of ibuprofen deal. I'm not complaining as much as warning. You'd think after having surgery, in the world of dentistry you're a friggn super hero. You're a survivor. You have endured the worst and thus chortle in the face of pain! HA HA HA! Hmmmm- nope. Tooth aches and adjustments are still killers you bulletproof madman, so take your petty over the counter meds before you enter... THE FORBIDDEN ROOM!

mandibular osteotomy gone wrong

 i had my surgery done on the 23rd may 2008, i looked like the elepant woman for ages. any way i had to have my left side redone a week later as one of the metal plates was apprently bent in recovery. well over a year later, i still look like the elephant woman, i have the most horrific infection in both sdes, i have a peice of sharp pointy bone and half a metal plate growing out of my left lower gum (its got ittlle gold screws!!) i have been back to the hospital twice over the last few months, saw some kind of junior doctor, who told me to rince my mouth out with salt water, and on my next visit i had to ask for antibiotics, not that i havent taken enough over the past year. it seems the surgeon was too tied up too see me, yet i had a room full after he had done the work before the complications set in, so he could show off!!! any way i take it my body has rejected the metal plates, thats why its growing out my gum and is embeding itself in my cheek. i have done everything i was told to after this surgery, im a quilified dental nurse, so am fully aware of dental hygine issues. so i have to ask myself was it all worth it, im sure i am just one of the unlucky ones, i am also seriously thinking about compensation.....i look like a monster, i have so much internal scaring that my face may never go down. well just wondering if anyone else has any horror stories?????

@emma33uk: You need to be going to an oral surgeon, not some "junior doctor" or ER physician that is not qualified in oral/maxillofacial surgery. If you don't trust the one that did your surgery, then find another one and tell them what is going on.

What you are experiencing is NOT NORMAL by any means. I'm not trying to scare you, but clearly there is some sort of infection or rejection going on inside of your body. Infections can be treated. You need to have this sorted out, and now.

Best of luck to you.

anaxthem: You're a great writer. What do you do for a living?

What is Queen Liz doing to her nose? Her finger looks a little far back for her to be picking it.

OMG - I feel your pain... literally! I fractured my condyle and fragmented the disk in January of this year. We tried everything we could before doing surgery. On July 16, 2009, I had a modified condylotomy. Basically he cut the mandible in half on the right side and shifted it downward to make a space in the joint. I had six screws drilled in with bands attached holding my jaw completely shut. I, like you, was in terrible pain with my teeth hurting, gums swelling, etc. I had an allergic reaction to anit-microbial mouth rinse he prescribed, which sucked! I had a panic attack one night, woke up at midnight and freaked out because I thought I couldn't breathe! Two nights later, I had an anxiety attack and felt like I was jumping out of my skin. My blood pressure was up to 145/90 (normally 110/65). I stopped taking the Tylenol w/ Codeine and had no more "mental" issues.

I have been banded shut for 6 weeks. After week 4, doc removed the front band. I was so grateful because it felt like my front teeth were just going to crumble under the pressure. This Thursday, I get the rest of the bands off. Woohoo, I think. I'm pretty sure there is going to be a lot of discomfort trying to move my jaw for the first time in so long. The only scary part really is that my gum has swelled/grown over the bands and the screws. I guess they are going to have to cut my gums to get the bands off? Then next week, back under general anesthesia to get the six screws removed.

I have added some photos for your viewing pleasure.
