APRIL 14TH, 2005

Day 4 in braces...the canker sores are still around (and annoying!) but the aching in my jaw has let up a bit which is nice. The lisp is still really bothering me though. I had to give a mini presentation today and I was so self-conscious about the lisp...it was awful! However, I know that I will get through this and I just have to take it one day at a time!

Here is a picture of my braces in their full glory that was taken on Day 1 at the ortho's office (beautiful, I know! :P ):

Your teeth are really nice actually, even, a nice size, white... just not straight as yet. I like the blue/grey ligs. They will go well wtih your eyes!

Ha ha yes, I should use that pic as my avatar!! :D Thanks for the support/comments.

Today (Day 5) is the first day that I've been painkiller free since the braces went on! Yay! I also ate a bowl of chili last night which was very exciting...my first real solid food in awhile. It took me around 45 minutes to eat a bowl full, but it was worth every tiny bite!

The canker sores are still abundant...I've been using the Biotene toothpaste and Colgate Peroxyl mouthrinse, plus lots of wax which seems to be helping.

It's just great to know that this process has finally started, and each day that passes I'm a day closer to having straight teeth!! :-*

I'm getting my braces put on April 20th and am glad I went through your post. I'm 28 and it makes me feel more at ease seeing all of us older (not old of course!!!) people getting braces. :)

Those cheek stretchers hurt. When they applied the brackets, they pushed against it so it cut into my gums.

I'm glad that people have been able to go through my story and feel better about getting braces--go for it!

I've officially been in braces for 1 week! I'm already starting to see tiny gaps between some of my teeth that were smushed tightly together before. I still have some canker sores, but I'm sort of getting used to them, and they don't hurt as badly as before. I'm also starting to get used to talking with a lisp. The lisp hasn't gone away completely, but I'm starting to speak a little better.

Also, the braces don't feel like little razor blades on the insides of my lips anymore which is nice. I'm actually looking forward to my "mini check-up" next week with my dentist to see what he has to say!

Update!

#25 Post by jaws »

APRIL 25TH, 2005

I went in today for a 2-week 'mini check-up' (my ortho likes to see people 2 weeks after they get their braces on to see how things are going).

It was a very quick appointment, but the hygenist said that everything looks great, nothing is inflamed, and I'm taking good care of my teeth. It was nice because I got to ask her a few questions--I'll post the answers here:

1) WILL I HAVE TO KEEP MY UPPER AND LOWER EXPANDERS IN FOR MY ENTIRE TREATMENT TIME?

She said that it depends. The reason my procedure is called "controlled arch" is because my ortho can control how much he wants my arches to expand. He might need to keep the expanders in place in order to maintain the wider arch while the teeth line up. However she said that as my upper arch expands, my expander wire will move more upwards and make my lisp less noticable (yay!).

2) THERE ARE CERTAIN AREAS THAT I CAN'T GET MY FLOSS THREADER THROUGH NO MATTER HOW HARD I TRY, IS THIS OK?

She said that instead of using floss in those areas I should dip my sulcabrush in some Listerine and massage in-between those particular teeth very thoroughly. She also said to use the pointy tip of my Rota-Dent to get into those spots.

3) I NOTICE I'M CLENCHING MY JAW MORE--WHY?

She said that my jaw is trying to get used to my new bite (I have pads on my back molars), and it is trying to 'return' itself to the deep bite that I had before, however the pads on my molars are preventing this from happening. She said that as my jaw muscles begin to relax, the clenching should go away. She said if I still feel like I'm clenching a lot after 1 month then they might have to fix the molar pads a bit.

4) I'M NOTICING TINY SPACES OPENING UP BETWEEN MY BOTTOM TEETH, BUT NOT MY TOP TEETH. IS IT HARDER TO EXPAND THE UPPER JAW THAN THE LOWER JAW?

She said that because I have two teeth that stick out a lot on the bottom (see pics--my two eye teeth on the bottom aren't even remotely in line with my other teeth), there is more room for my other teeth down there to move apart more quickly than my upper teeth. She said that in the future they MIGHT have to use powerchains to pull those two 'stray' teeth into the proper positions (eeek!).

So, that's my update for now. I have an appointment for my first (1 month) adjustment on May 9th, where she said they would change the ligs and maybe the wire. Wish me luck! :D

Just thought I would post some extra info about the types of brackets and expanders that I have. My brackets appear to be Delta Force Brackets from Ortho Organizers, which have different options for the ligs depending on the amount of friction that the ortho wants:

http://www.orthoorganizers.co.uk/Produc ... #Stainless

Also by looking on this site I found out that my 'expanders' (called 'Multi-Distalizing Arch') seem to be effective at widening the arch without having to remove teeth, and without the need for headgear, turning a key, etc. AND they are not dependent on age or growth for producing dramatic results! How exciting! :D

FIRST ADJUSTMENT!

#27 Post by jaws »

MAY 9TH, 2005

Well, I had my first adjustment today! Nothing new was really done, as my ortho said that my expanders need to make more space for my teeth before I get any wire changes. He said that it will probably be around 4 months before I get a new wire, and it won't seem like much is happening during those 4 months, but then all of a sudden when I start getting new wires my teeth will really start moving, so that was good to hear.

He also shaved down a little bit of the beautiful red buildups on my back molars, because I said I was clenching a lot at night, and getting really intense toothaches (like more than just regular 'brace ache') in one of my molars. Let's hope that fixes the problem!

I also asked whether simply expanding my arch (I'm not getting any teeth extracted) is really going to make enough room for my very crowded bottom teeth. He said definitely, and even showed me cases that he's done that are similar to my case, and it was amazing! Now I definitely have faith that I don't need extractions.

So, even though there hasn't been much change in my teeth, I thought I would provide some one-month progress pics:

Here is a basic "tooth shot":

Image

If you look at my 'before' shots (on page 1), you'll see that there hasn't been too much change...but here is something that I'm excited about:

Image

If you look closely you'll notice a small gap between my two bottom front teeth (a gap which never existed before!). This means that my expander is working and is creating the space necessary for my other teeth! Yay!

Ok and here is a bottom shot:

Image

And a top shot:

Image

I might just be imagining things, but for some reason I feel like my top arch looks like it has expanded a *tiny* bit! :)

I must say that after a month I am still not completely used to my braces and expanders, but I'm getting there and just trying to keep a positive attitude!

I go back in two weeks to check up on that toothache that I've been having in my molar...so we'll see how it goes!

Hi Everyone,

This is a message that I've been thinking about posting for awhile now, so I decided I would do it.

I have received a couple of posts/private messages from guys on this site complementing me on my looks, etc. While I appreciate the complements, I am on this site to receive and provide support in relation to my experience as an adult in braces. I currently have a wonderful boyfriend, and I am not interested in pursuing any kind of on-line relationship.

I haven't received any messages that were 'out of line' or perverse in any way, and I'm sure every message that has been sent my way had good intensions. I just wanted to get the message out there that I am a member of this forum solely to chat about braces.

I am more than happy to receive messages and help answer questions(from men and women) about their experiences with braces. I would just appreciate it if we kept on the topic at hand.

This is a great forum, and everyone is so supportive of each other. I don't mean to offend anyone, and if I took any messages that I've received the wrong way then I apologize. I just wanted to make my intentions on this site clear!

Thanks so much :)

You won't get canker sores if you use toothpaste that does not contain Sodium Laural Sulfate.
REALLY!!! I've suffered from them all my life...2 or 3 a month! Now I get NONE! I haven't had a single one since I got braces because I use a toothpaste without SLS!!

Try this brand: Kiss My Face Sold at Drugstore.com. (this is a link to the product I use)

Here's a link to info on this subject. It's PROVEN and I can attest to the effectiveness of the non SLS toothpaste. They're not sold in stores so do a search on the net.

Hi Jennielee,

Thanks for the advice. I actually bought some Biotene toothpaste and mouthrinse from my local drugstore around a month ago and I definitely notice a difference. Biotene doesn't contain any SLS or alcohol, and it makes my canker/mouth sores feel SO much better! I definitely recommend it to anyone who is experiencing these types of problems!
