Haha I don't recommend anyone to live in manchester
I got my referal within a month but it was the inital appointment that took me 3 months to get. You could look at hospitals near you online to see if any have a oral and maxofacial unit, and it will state where they accept refferals from, some accept gp referals x
That is extremely helpful ! It would help me so much to get nhs funding ! I just spoke with my regular dentist practice & I was told the ortho isn't taking on anymore nhs patients at the minute but that's progress within its self as I didn't realise at any point they took on nhs referrals ! X
There's still a possibility that your dentist may be able to send you to a nearby hospital! Keep going on at them! I'm glad you have some hope into getting some treatment!!!

Thank you !
I'm going to ring around a few dentist and ortho's tomorrow and see if they accept NHS patients and also check out the hospital 2
I read your journey and it sounds like your doing great!
Sorry for the late reply! Thank you for the warm welcome.
I'm used to them. My doctor saw how scratched up I have been inside my mouth and have prescribed me some biotene and a steroid inhaler to spray on my sores. They have given me a lot of help. There was concerns I wasn't eating enough since I dropped about 4kg in about 2 weeks but I'm slowly getting used to it.
As for the NHS care: My dentist was private and he recommended me to a private ortho. That consultation didn't go very well and I ended up discussing it with my GP. He kindly referred me to my surgeon who then introduced me to his orthodontist. Together they applied for funding for me. It did take a long time to get approval.... So a good 8 months for both the braces and the surgery. But once that was approved everything has gone really quickly. I have a great relationship with them so I'm very pleased and happy with my care so far.
I wish everyone else luck who is trying to get treatment.
hi everyone,
thank for all your help and assistance yesterday. i have woke up yet again with pain the right side of my jaw. it hurts to try and bite my teeth together and I have decided to visit the dr's today to try and obtain a referral for the oral and maxillofacial unit at my local hospital.
i'm nervous they will just try and fob me off but I have a good relationship with the drs at my surgery and i'm hoping if i explain the pain and the position i am in and what i'm trying to achieve they will be able to refer me. worse case is they say no in which case I will visit my dentist - if they can't treat me under the nhs then I will have to pay but at least i no i have done everything i can in the meantime
It went well My dr is referring me to the relevant department (which I'm assuming is oral and maxillofacial ) as he says it sounds like TMJ - Thinks are looking up for me - I'm so glad I decided to explore this avenue. I'm hoping I won't even have a massive wait until I receive an appointment as they send you all the paperwork and you book the appointment yourself
