Dr. Wolford (Texas) expects full payment before surgery
Moderator: bbsadmin
Braceschris, thanks for your concern. Yes, I will secure my records from Dr. Wolford's office. His office manager called me within 5 minutes of my making my appt. with the new OS. She had been contacted by my othodontist that I was changing doctors. My husband and I are nearing retirement age and the last thing we want to do is take $38,000 out of the pot. We pay dearly for our 2 insurances and frankly I want them to pay appropriately. The doctors that don't contract with insurances should notify patients in writing, up front, that they expect payment before services begin and dealings with insurance are their own responsibility. It cost me over $600 to find this out.

ladyjenie, if you are still on here I live in the same area as you and I'm having the same problem with Aetna and Dr Wolford. Who did you end up going to?

Wow, $44,000 down. That's shocking. My surgeon charges $1,500 down, and even that was negotiable once I showed him that I had already met my out of pocket max for the year and he would get paid regardless..

It's absolutely crazy

Yes, that amount out-of-pocket is ridiculous but in our area of Texas there aren't many surgeons attempting this degree of surgery.
I lady who used Dr. W and was very happy with her results told me he had many years of extended schooling plus he calculates many factors in his price, i.e. specialized equipment, trained assistants for office and surgery that include PA's and NP's, consultation time, and most likely liability protection. And I would assume he may have plastic surgery training.
When I was in his office I met a young girl who flew in from California and was 1-week post op. She was bubbling with excitement that her pain was almost all gone and she was happy with her results. Her parents had spent a lot of money on other surgeries that failed and finally heard about Dr. W. The young lady had to stay another week for her 2-week checkup and then could return home. I might add she looked pretty good for going through what she did but had some light bruising and swelling.
His price was just out of my league. I have paid a ton of money fighting Lyme disease that has not only destroyed my TM's but other joints as well and felt I should try to locate an OS in a bordering state and work with an in-network provider.
All Oral Surgeons are not created equal so be very selective and if something doesn't feel right in your gut then likely you're in the wrong place, just my opinion.
