palatal expander

#46 Post by Chicagogal »

(I think this is the dental forum I've been looking for!!! I've been on another forum where the discussion is only around invisalign and nothing else despite the topic heading "orthodontics")

I was told by one dentis/ortho that my case wasn't treatable using invisalign  because i needed my upper jaw expanded (had it done in middle school, didn't stick). As he happened to specialize in non-surgical adult jaw expansion he recommended a palatal expander and then metal brackets (basically traditional braces) and maybe rubber bands, to close the jaw. This would be a loooong painful and expensive process.

I'm heading for another consultation soon and am working on my list of questions for the next ortho. was wondering if Dr. S had ever treated a patient with an underbite with ibraces, or if a combinate of an expander and invisalign had ever been used.
THANKS!!!

Yes, as ortho forums go this one is hard to beat.

I had an underbite and have upper linguals (lower ceramics/metal). The underbite was treated successfully and I had no expander. I guess it depends on the size of the underbite.....mine wasn't that bad, with front teeth hitting edge to edge.
