Under Construction, years ago I had to get my canine taken out of the roof of my mouth because no one thought it could come down.

Now, I have braces on to help create a bigger opening (baby canine was still there) and my dentist, ortho, and oral surgeon all recommend an implant over just closing the gap. With the baby tooth still there, the gap was so small and I just wanted it closed, but after doing a lot of research, I decided I needed to have the canine tooth implanted. I dread the whole procedure, but I think in the end I will be happy to have a canine implant, and keep the healthy matching canine on the other side.

Hi BracedVeryLate,

Yes, I have been doing some research and most of what I'm finding shows that implants are more common than closing the gap. My orthodontist also showed me my original molds and there is a substantial difference in placement between my upper teeth and my bottom teeth. My lower jaw is very narrow and he thinks that by removing a couple of teeth up top he can improve my bite as well. I'm nervous, (very nervous about my surgery which is scheduled for Tuesday of next week!) but I know I am in good hands. What I can't seem to find are before and after photos of this particular procedure - removing the teeth and closing the gaps. Any suggestions?

Thanks all for your input. It's very helpful to have a place to talk about this stuff. My poor husband's eyes glaze over. He can only take so much tooth talk!

So I had three teeth removed yesterday under general anathesia - my baby canine, my impacted canine and a cuspid on the other side of my mouth. My question is...am I still part of the Impacted Canines club? :) It's no longer in my mouth!

Hopefully these gaps close up quickly. I have an adjustment next Thursday to start getting these babies on the move.

Last week, I just had my mouth lasered!!

My right canine was taking a long time to come down so they used a laser to "burn" the gum away so they could pull it with a chain....

It kills!! I'm popping painkillers like skittles!! I even drink water and it burns the area arrrrg lol Anyways, I hope it comes down fast and in place because I'm over treatment its been almost 3 years since my surgery with chains and over 2 years with braces.

Anyone else had this laser treament done? How long until it came down since then?

Cheers, - rant over lol

CCandy,
I've never heard of laser treatment. Has your ortho or oral surgeon mentioned why it has taken so long? If you don't mind me asking... what is your age? I've read that over age 40 is when the tooth can most likely be fused to the bone. I wonder if laser treatment is helpful if they suspect the tooth is fused to the bone..??

I plan to schedule my exposure surgery for next week or the week following. I'm feeling aprehensive due to my age ~ I'm 40.

Under Construction, I hope they move quickly for you! Yes, you're still a member!

Mini-Implants & Impacted Canines Possibly Fused

#96 Post by LLV »

Mini-implants are becoming much more common now are are much less invasive than a traditional post. They are smaller and don't go as deep as a traditional implanted post and can be done in a short period of time. They are also half the cost! So my question is this:

Has anyone been diagnosed with a fused canine that could not be extracted and as an alternative had a mini-implant put into it's open space with the impacted tooth remaining?

I'm 22 and they didn't mention anything about fusing to the bone more that it was really far up. From what I can gather it was just to push things along...

I am also a member of the club with two baby canine teeth and the need to bring the impacted teeth down.
My orthodontist has advised I need to get my baby teeth removed (at the same time 4 wisdom teeth and 4 other adult teeth). Then two weeks later braces on. Is this the normal order of things or is it because he thinks there is room for them? Because it looks too crowded to me. Mmmmm

Any suggestions / comments ?

I had that done. In my case, it had already come down enough that they could put a bracket on it and attach it to my archwire once they lasered my gums. So it was only about a month and the canine was in its proper place!
I had my braces on for 2 years, 1 month, 2 weeks and 2 days.

So it took almost 2 years but my canine is finally poking through my gum!! I almost thought this day would never come since I had had to have my chain reattached 5 times. I wish I would have went to this last Oral Surgeon the first time and then I may have been out of braces at the beginning of the year. But I'm so freakin happy I'm almost done with this :).

It's been awhile since I updated... I had exposure surgery in June and my ortho put a bracket on the impacted canine last week.

I think it may already be moving. I could feel the bracket up in the roof of my mouth and now the bracket is lower, falling below the roof of my mouth.. I hope that makes sense! I was too afraid to look until Friday =)

Someone on the board mentioned they thought their canine was moving but it was her other teeth instead so I don't want to get my hopes up. The impacted tooth is above my baby tooth and I think it's in the path so I'm not sure it will come down while the baby tooth is in place. My othro is using an elastic to bring it down. I'm hopeful!

I too have a impacted tooth. Went though surgery to attach the chain 5 weeks ago. Friday, my ortho put a monkey spring and we are waiting for movement!! I am 32 years old and Ortho says its alot harder to get them to come down the older you are. Hopefully this will be a fast process, so far I feel like a teething baby!

My 2nd canine poked through about 2 weeks ago and is coming down pretty quick it only took 3.5 years :(

It will probably be a while before this one moves into place because of how far it is from its final destination but with any luck time will fly by!

Final home stretch woooo

Congrats, CCandy! Wow, 3.5 years...you have more patience than I. Hopefully that second canine moves into place quickly for you!
