OMG, This is very uncomfortable!!! OUCH!!

#1 Post by Carolinahigh12 »

Okay so it is day two in spacers and they are really starting to hurt now. I didnt know eating would be so difficult. It hurts to bite down. I have 9 days to go until these things can come out and I had to remove all toothpicks from my kitchen so I wont be tempted to take one and pull these stupid things out. The spacer that is killing me the most is the one that is next to the extraction site. The space hurts where the tooth was taken out; it feels as if the tooth it trying to slide into that spot. OMG I am irratated and I am trying to calm down but it is very difficult. I am thinking towards the end result, but then I realize that I still have 9 DAYS to go with these things in my mouth. Does the pain slowly subside at any point, or is this a constant bugging ache that will be with me for the next 9 DAYS ? :( :-+ :-(( :soremouth:

Take a deep breath and let it all out. The spacers do get better. I wont say comfortable, but better. This is also one of the worst parts of braces if not the worst. I have spent lots of time with spacers at various points in treatment so i know what you are going through. Soon they will just be a faded memory.

You will probably find that as the days go by with your spacers in, the pain will rise, peak, then subside. Mine were the most painful on days 2-4 (I had them in for 8 days). As the spacers move your teeth, the pain will be less because things arent so tight in there.

Whatever you do, don't pull them out. If you do that, you'll go to your next appointment and they'll just put them back in and send you home for another week. Spacers are very, very important.

If I were you I would use the highest safe dosage of whatever your favorite OTC painkiller is - whatever it says to take on the bottle. This might not make the pain go away completely but it ill numb it up a tad, at least. Hang in there!

The pain will fade it does not last the entire time. You should take the ibuprofen at least every 6 hours. I would forget and not take it and then the pain got worse. Hang in there....

It is weird, the ones that are near the molars dont bother me at all, it is just two out of 9 that are iratating me the most. I think as long as I keep myself busy, it does not give me the time to think about the spacers. I hope you guys are right when you said that this is the worst part of the treatment; I didnt even have this much pain when I had my wisdom teeth removed :).

I just needed somewhere to complain, and I think I am done with that now. Thanks for listening

Spacers are by far the worst part! We all hated them! Just hang in there. They will be out of your mouth soon!

I have a date to have a spacer put in on the 25th. Now I am really dreading it... But as it is by a molar hopefully it will not hurt as bad.

I got my lower braces in January, and spacers did not hurt that much. BUT now I have six of them up and one down (my one second molar will be banded) and my teeth hurts really much! They started ache one hour after the spacers were put in. I have been taking pain killers all the time. Last night an earthquake woke me up and I had to take a painkiller again.
I feel little bit nauseaus because of painkillers.

This is the most painful experience in my braces career..

Well an update on my spacers adventure!!!

As you can tell by the ticker below, today makes 4 days with spacers. The pain is bearable now, but still a little tender near the cuspids area. I can eat now, but very slowly and carefully. I have 6 days to go and I think I can make it. I just came back from a business trip and it was an adventure to see how long it took for me to eat. Thinking back to Monday and Tuesday morning, I could not even eat a soft muffin, but last night I ate grilled chicken. So I can feel a difference and I dont need to take as much OTC. The spacers feel like they did the first couple of hours that I had them in. Dont get me wrong, this for me was a bad experience, but it time all things will pass and the pain is not as servere.

LOULOU, what day are U getting braces?

BTW- thnx guys for all the encouragement. It is nice to have feedback and sympothy from someone who has experience the same as I.

Spacers are by far the worst of the whole process. In two words: They suck. Period.

I just got my spacers in yesterday, so I know exactly how you're feeling. They're quite uncomfortable :/

Luckily, I only need mine on for three days, I'm going in on Thursday to get my braces on! :D

Okay so I am in my last day with spacers, and eating has become less painful and manageable. However, now I am having some minor jaw pains now which I never had much of in the first place. Some of my teeth have shifted significantly since being in spacers, but I am not going to worry about it. It should be all corrected during my 22 months of treatment. If you notice below, tomorrow is the big B-DAY. I think I am looking forward more to getting the spacers out than putting on the brackets.
