Joining the club!

#1 Post by kellybeans »

Hi! So, I found this site about a year ago when I first started thinking about braces. It has been extremely helpful in making the decision to do it and how to proceed as well as making me feel less alone as an adult with braces.

Anyway, I'll give you the extremely abridged version of my story. I'm 30 and had braces for 3 years as a teen. I had 5 years of ortho work before braces including a herbst, a bionator (which doubled as a palate expander), a lip bumper, TPA, and headgear :!: I don't think I'm forgetting anything. I was a very non-compliant patient... missed adjustments, didn't wear my headgear, etc. I went off to college with braces, which made getting to appointments nearly impossible, not to mention that by then I had pretty much mentally checked out of the entire process. And although not perfect, my teeth were okay so we made the decision to just remove them. I was given retainers, which of course I never wore

Fast forward 10 years and my teeth have slowly but surely shifted. They aren't as bad as they once were (especially the bottom teeth), but they've definitely changed, particularly in the last 1.5 to 2 years. I have spaces that have opened up between teeth, my upper first bicuspids are turned at a funny angle (causing me to bite my tongue constantly), others have tilted, and last but certainly not least I have an 8 mm overjet! They look relatively straight, so most people are shocked that I’m doing this. I get the same reaction from everyone at work: “But WHY? You’re teeth are totally FINE.â€

Welcome, kellybeans, and congrats on your decision! I've had my braces for just over 2 months now, so I am still pretty new, too. Rest assured that the talking and cheek-biting will get better (or at least you won't notice it anymore  ). But, you probably already knew that...

Anyway, welcome aboard! :jump:

Thanks for the welcome everyone!! My mouth is feeling better already. A couple of tender teeth on top and still some trouble eating and talking, but nothing compared to the first 2 days. The rinsing and wax make all the difference!

Karen - I couldn't believe it myself when I woke up the next day and looked up into the roof of my mouth and saw that my snaggletooth was already turning. It was nothing anyone else would notice, but I could see it!

My husband and I are going to take pictures every Sunday and eventually make a time lapse video. I can't wait to see the changes!
