Newbie... how can i get more space on bottom arch?

#1 Post by bfrod »

Just started braces a month ago. Only have ice brackets on top and metal rings around my bottom molars right now. Waiting for bite plate to be put in and bottom metal brackets. I have crowding on the top/bottom, an overbite and both top/bottom teeth all tip inward.
I've been trying to educate myself on this website as I feel I needed to become an orthodontist to fully understand what's happening to me. UGH!

My current problem: Big miscommunication between ortho and myself to the point that I no longer like him. He wants to pull a single tooth from the bottom/front teeth to make space to move the rest. I obviously don't want to. I spent over $1100 this past year before I started braces to keep that tooth healthy.

I worry that pulling the one tooth will result in more overbite by making the bottom arch much smaller than the top. Also, how does that affect the mouth as I'll have 14 teeth on top and 13 on the bottom?

I've researched a little about 'shaving' the teeth and have read a little about sagittal expanders.

Are these my best options to extraction? Thank you.

sorry for the late response, been stuck working a lot.

it sounds a little complicated but i do get it. just looking at my mouth, my lower arch is already much smaller than the upper. (because the teeth tilt inward the lower arch practically fits inside the upper arch)

thank you for that info as it really gets me thinking. i will definitely have to talk more with my orthodontist.
