Jaw wired shut - day after getting wired cut?

#1 Post by Alphexo »

Hi,

For those who had there jaws wired shut, what was it like the day after you had them cut? I know you'll have lockjaw for quite a while and it'll take time to regain your ROM. But the day getting them cut and day after, could you eat normal food again if you cut them up enough? I was just wondering because I have to pack pureed food for lunch etc, and I would rather not do that if I can and just go with chunky soup at a deli or something. Also I was planning on having a BBQ that weekend and I know I won't be biting into massive steaks or anything but was hoping to cut meat up enough to eat it. Thanks.

I am getting un-rubberbanded in 2 days (this Monday) after 4 weeks and 3 days of being banded completely shut. I had upper jaw surgery (moving the upper jaw forward) and lower jaw surgery (moving the lower jaw back with no screws). I am leaving for a short trip beginning Wednesday night. Since I'll be taking a plane, I wonder what I'll be able to eat while I travel. Thanks in advance for any help!

Alphexo,

Just agreeing with Meryaten here...be kind to yourself in regards to food, and start out with pureed and extremely soft foods. In good time, you will be able to advance to soft chew.

Be well, and at peace,

Phil

I was tightly banded for 10 days after surgery, then they were switched for looser bands. Maybe my ROM was worse than others, I have no idea, but for the first 2-3 days, the most i could open was about 3 mm- just enough to see a (tiny) gap between my teeth. It wasn't for until the 3rd or fourth day (can't remember) until I could even eat peach yogurt because I couldn't fit the little peach chunks in my mouth. By then I could also eat alphagetti, which turned out to be a lifesaver, because it has tiny noodles and they are quite soft to chew - even though I didn't bother chewing them because it felt too weird. I just shoved them into my mouth and swallowed lol.

Everything regarding the surgery has been a breeze so far for me, but this being wired shut thing is the one pain in my side I want to get rid of. I am constantly hungry and can't wait until the wires are cut. Lunch has been especially difficult since I don't get a lunch break.

But for all those out there contemplating this route of IVRO, I have to say that my face looks 90% normal; I'm not even sure if any swelling exists anymore, I've regained 100% of feeling back in my lips, and it's only been 3 weeks, so pros and cons, pros and cons . . .

I've just had my wires cut after 6 weeks this Tues!

Anyway err on the Tues, I was able to have some soup without blending it.

I've had difficulty brushing my teeth on the inside as my mouth doesn't open fully yet, it's still stiff.

Yesterday and today I have eaten pasta, I've been cutting it up with a knife and fork into small pieces that I can fit into my mouth.

Chewing is slowly improving but it all takes time unfortunately!
