First adjustment

#1 Post by braciefacie »

Hi guys,

Just had my first adjustment a few days ago - it was a painful when my ortho changed the wires (especially when she was doing the steel wire tires) - there were times when I thought she was going to yank a tooth out and I couldn't help but yelp and tear up!

However, when she finished - I didn't really feel any pain/pressure. Is this normal? I was bracing myself for the worst and even got some painkillers ready, just in case - but didn't need them after all. I guess this is a good thing that I'm not in pain - but is this the norm?

I admit that the teeth do hurt a lot when I try to chew or when I try to floss - so I guess that is some reassurance that my teeth are under a bit of pressure and moving - but I was expecting a lot more pain/pressure?

I think it just depends on what they do to you at your first adjustment that determines whether you'll be super sore or not. I kept reading all the posts on here about how people's first adjustment was almost as bad as initially getting braced and how they were super sore afterwards that, when it came time for my first adjustment last week, I was prepared (i.e. stocked up on soup and soft foods.) Then, when I went in, they hardly did anything. That is, they glued my bracket back on to my crown, replaced my yellowed clear bumpers with grey ones (YES!), and changed some wires. I didn't notice any soreness at all, really. However, my ortho did inform me that I'll be getting powerchains on top and bottom next time, so I imagine I will be sore after the second adjustment.

I had my first adjustment some days back too, and it hurt more than when i was braced last month. But as I've read in these forums many times, it will only hurt this bad for the first few adjustments. :D
thanks to archwired.com and its members for all the great advice!

Thanks guys for replies :)

My ortho put two springs on my top arc, but it doesn't hurt and I don't feel any pressure - only when I'm biting on my molars, there's a bit of pressure on the teeth that's attached to the spring, but other than that...nothing o.o

We'll see how things go in the 2nd adjustment - she mentioned something about putting on some elastics (probably to move my teeth faster).

Pretty much every time I have gone in to have something done there has been some soreness and tenderness afterwords. I've had my braces on for a year and 8 months now I've felt just about all of it...

Yes a lot of the stuff hurts me too. What really hurt me the most is when they put rubber bands on my back lower molars and connected that to the little hook near my top bicuspids... holy mother of.... yeah good luck sleeping that night is all I can say. I had to take the rubber bands out in order to sleep. If you have ceramic brackets its no fun getting those taken off either... feels like your tooth is gonna break in half.

I also dont like when they use the clippers to shorten the wire so it does not dig into my mouth... the shock from that cut travels through all of my teeth along that wire... ugh.

There is a whole bunch of not fun stuff involved with braces thats for sure, haha. Yet I still think its totally worth it!

Take some aspirin beforehand to kinda take the edge of the pain that will help. Also eat a lot before you go cause chances are you wont wont to eat much that night ;)
