lower jaw or both jaws??

hi,
i have an underbite and i'm going to have a jaw surgery to fix it but there is something i'm really worried about.
my lower teeth protrude about 4 mm infront of my upper teeth and i was wondering will the surgery require moving only my lower jaw or both jaws?

I'm asking you this becouse i haven't spoke to my surgeon about the surgery yet becouse he's busy

so can someone please answer me this question if you had a similar problem?

Hi zeki,

I also have an underbite, but even so, not everyone with underbite goes through the same treatment. It varies from case to case. First, you should have your orthodontist look at you, your X-ray and the jaw model carefully before any decision is made. After that, he will say whether you need both or only one jaw operated.

Because my upper jaw also protrudes a little bit - dental compensation as some call - I have to have a surgery on both jaws. However, after nearly 1 year with braces, my upper jaw become straight. Thus, my otho said I no more need an upper surgery.

So, consult with your otho carefully, it is the best way to figure out!

I have an underbite as well. When I was consulting with orthodontists they said if I chose to have surgery I would definetly need upper jaw surgery and probably lower. A surgeon told me I'd need upper and lower.
They all said my upper jaw is deficient.

I have an underbite as well and have been told I will need upper jaw surgery only.

I have a three to four mm underbite and the doc said he will have to move both my upper and my lower jaw.
But again everyone's case is differnt. They have yo measure your face and jaw and also take multiple xrays and casts/molds to see what you need. The only reason I need both is because if they just move my lower jaw my face wont look right. he is moving the top more for cosmetic reasons then anything

I agree, it just depends on the person. In my case, I have a 3mm underbite, so surgery would involve moving my top jaw forward 4mm. However, my lower teeth are crowded, so once they are straight, the underbite might be more like 5-6mm, so in that case, my lower jaw would also have to be pushed back, so that the top jaw doesn't stick out too much. I hope that makes sense!
