"Fake" teeth after extractions

#1 Post by Lingualita »

I have one question. I'm a 23 year old woman who is having a severe overbite. It's always bothered me BIG TIME, and while this is difficult, I actually feel relieved that I'm finally getting started:) Might have to have jaw surgery as well, as I have a quite gummy smile as well, but will se a surgeon later on to discuss this further.

I've had braces now for three weeks on my upper jaw, and I'll have four extractions to make room, and correct my overbite. My otho has explained that I'll get some sort of fake tooth glued on in the gap in the upper jaw, which will decrease as the gap closes. I asked my ortho if I wasn't going to get this on the lower jaw as well, since I'm having two extractions there as well. He told me that he's never done that before, and it's not very visible, so it's not a normal procedure. This amazed me a bit, since I would think that you show more of your lower jaw than upper jaw. Any comments/experiences on this? Would be very grateful for any feedback:)

Now I've had the fake teeth on the top for about three weeks. It's working out pretty good. I've lost one of them twice, but then I just went back to the dentist to have it glued back on. Keeping my finers crossed, they'll stay in for a while now.

I did not get anything to cover up the wholes in my lower jaw. But this turned out not to be so visible, so it doesn't bother me anymore.

What botheres me now is more that I feel that my lower linguals are very visible when I talk. Haven't gotten any such feedback yet, but I find it very visible when I talk "in front of the mirror" :D LOL

Once I've solved one problem (worrying about not hiding extraction gaps in my lower jaw), I find another one :? LOL.

In my upper jaw I have two "fake" teeth were my extracted teeth used to be. There used to be a gap on about one-two mm, but this has now closed due to some sort of elastics on the back.

It used to be a gap, and now I can hardly floss. I was told they would "shave" the plastic teeth as we go along. There is still 7 weeks until I have my next appoinment, and it seems my gap is already closed. I am worried that this could cause the movement to be slower than it could've been, and my biggest fear is that the teeth could be even more crooked due to this fake tooth "blocking" the way of movement.

Am I just being hysterical, or should I call my ortho and ask for advice? He seems like a very busy man, and I would hate to bother him for no reason.

Any reply truly appreciated :D
