I'm in need of some reassurance...

#1 Post by xnicole »

Okay, so I've had my braces on for approximately 6 years and 9 months and I'm starting to feel very discouraged. I am 14 and many students I know at my school have recently gotten their braces off and I am getting jealous. I have and appointment on April 8th and the orthodontist said that six weeks after that, they would take x-rays and then would determine if I would be finished with braces. For some reason, I am highly doubting that they will be off then. Can anyone help me to find some reassurance? I will post some pictures of my current teeth soon.
Yes, I look froward to my orthodontist appointments :D

So sorry your treatment has been so long. I have a friend who had his braces on for about 8 years and had to go through headgear and everything. He does have very nice teeth now though... I don't know why it takes so long for some people but just know that you are not alone and that indeed, there have been others and are probably others out there right now that have had theirs on for quite a while. But you are still relatively young so I'm sure you will have them off before a lot of the big milestones during high school like your sweet 16 and learning to drive, your prom and graduation and all of those things will be brace free! A lot of people have to have their braces on during those things and when they do and you are all done and looking fab then they will be the jealous ones. At 14 I'm sure there are a lot of people getting theirs off right now but I'd assume there are many people who are still in them or who have just started or havent even started their braces journey yet. I know a lot of people I went to high school with had theirs on til senior year bc they didnt get them til around sophomore year. So hopefully this will provide at least a small amount of comfort for you - I can see how you would not be very optimistic at this point about your upcoming xray appointment but maybe it will be good news. I'll be hoping it is. Stay in touch and keep us all updated!

Oh wow, well done on getting this far. I can understand you would be keen to get them off after 6 years  Hang on in there these last couple of months, I'm sure you'll be so pleased with the results when the time comes.

Slightly OT sorry, but why would they put braces on someone only 8 yrs old to start with? I thought you had to have all your adult teeth before they would brace you? I know they refused to brace my son even though they could see he was going to need braces, they kept telling us we must wait til his adult teeth were all through before starting :?:
