Anyone had screws removed? rop

#1 Post by starteeth »

I had my surgery in Feb and then had to be opened again in April to have my septum put back in place, since it shifted. Everything is fine now and I am nearly healed. I almost feel like I never even had surgery. My braces will be coming off next month. However, there is a screw near my nose that my surgeon said is a little high up and is kind of pulling/stretching the skin near my nose, making my nostril flare slightly and if it doesn't correct itself, he may want to remove that screw in a few months.

Is this a fairly simple procedure? Will I swell badly again? I do imagine my upper lip/gum will have to be cut and re-stitched, thus it will be wonky and stiff for a few weeks But I can handle that...I am mostly concerned about numbness and swelling up again. I finally am through with that part and I don't want it again. But if it is only minimal then that wouldn't be so bad.

i'd assume they'd only make the incisions as big as they needed to be to remove the screws that were bothering you, I doubt they'll even remove all of them.

I am having two plates removed on Thursday. My surgeon used plates with long arms for my second surgery - one of those arms protrudes a little near my eye - it doesn't hurt, its just bothersome. The other one is flush to the bone on the upper jaw, it doesn't stick out but there is a noticeable bump on upper gum.

The surgeon said that recovery would be very uncomfortable and to be very sure I wanted to have the procedure done. I'll also have a black eye.

I'll let you know how everything turns out.

You're right. It was no big deal, hardly any pain, a few days of swelling and that's it. I took tylenol for a few days and had to eat soft foods for five or six days until the stitches came out, but really, no big deal.

My OS gave me the plates and screws as my final parting gift. It was my last OS appointment, sort of bittersweet.
