Did jaw surgery affect anyones speech?

#1 Post by moswissa »

Yo whats up! I had this surgery in august and my speech is comprehensive and all but i cant say the S too good. even before surgery, my underbite made it to wear i cant make certain sounds. I have read that this surgery corrects any speech problems. So is it the braces or should I go see a speech therapist?

The muscles need to be re-coordinated. See a speech therapist.

Unless the braces are on the interior side of your teeth, they shouldnt be effecting your pronunciation.

I would try remedying it on your own first. Work with a friend or family member and practice certain sounds or words until they sound "right". Speech therapy is expensive and not covered by many insurances.

Similarly, I would recommend seeing a doctor about your ears. Many problems with nose/ear/throat can be connected. Its possible that your bite is effecting the way your ears are functioning, causing pain and a lack of "proper" perception. Do they ever ache?

I had some problems speaking after my jaw was unwired. I'm 5 weeks post op now, unwired for 3. I have a problem with a couple letters every now and then but its getting better. Just talk and work on it, it just takes some time for everything to get back to normal :)
