What does 24/7 wear time really mean???

I am finished my invisalign aligners and now have the invisalign retainers. My ortho was VERY busy during my retainer visit, so I didn't get my answer to this. I asked if I should wear the retainers 24/7 and he said "Well, pretty much, but you could leave them out a bit". I know with the active treatment, 20-22 hours was recommended wear time. Is it the same with the retainers??

I have the clear plastic retainers.....When my ortho told me 24/7 I was told to leave them in all the time except when I am eating.....then brush and put them back in...because leaving them out for to long at first can allow your teeth to shift.

For the sake of your smile, I'd take that to mean wear them all the time except when brushing/ eating.
