TMJ

#1 Post by Marisama »

I just wanted to post a thread to see what everyone's pre-op TMJ condition is like compared to their post-op TMJ condition. Please indicate pain level 1-10, Clicking & Popping pre- and post- orthognathic surgery.

Thanks everyone,

Ryan

Hey Ryan,

My clicking popping as you know, was really bad pre-op I can officially say I have not had a click or pop in at least a week now...nearly 4mo. post-op. My jaw pain is nearly non existent now. Just the stress of having braces still on is irritating and my muscles are still trying to adjust to their new locations. Pre-Op I would take at least an hour nap each day just to get away from the pain, I no longer have to do this.

I'm sorry no one else has responded...but rest assured I feel amazing compared to pre-op. It does take time to heal post-op, but the pay off is awesome.

I had absolutely no TMJ symptoms pre-surgery. I know have regular popping and clicking. Foods which are difficult to chew remain challenging, even now that my active treatment is long past over. It is not painful, more of an annoyance than anything else, and one of those daily reminders of what I've been through.

My guess is that the last surgery that I had (which was a re-do because of a maxillary non-union) in December 2007 really did the muscles and tendons in. My mouth was stretched open for nearly five hours!

An increase in TMJ symptoms is one of those side effects that almost no one mentions, but it is a very real possibility, even with just orthodontic treatment. So is gum recession, which I never had before, but have a little now in spots. Fortunately, my dentist says that it is not serious, and we will just watch for a while.

Be well, and at peace,

Phil
