braces newbie

#1 Post by sab »

I love this website!!
I just got my braces on tuesday and I am getting a little more used to them, I went with Damons, metal on top and bottom in hopes that they work a little faster. My mouth has been a mess forever and I have been slowing getting the work done that was necessary to get my braces on. My top is a mess, I have the crazy vampire canines. They are exposed and came out thru the gumline over my baby teeth that they had to extract when they put my braces on. I can't believe that I waited 31 yrs to get those stupid baby teeth out. It's super encouraging to see other people with wonky canines and how quickly they seem to come down. I probably should take pictures soon so I can obsess over movement. :D I will be getting adjustments every 4 weeks which is fine by me, hopefully that will move things along that much quicker. I really only am concerned about the cosmetic issues in my mouth, and really don't want to do 9 months of tweaking my bite after my teeth are straight, any thoughts on that? I know I am spending the $$ to do this and I do want to do it right but I just don't understand the last months of treatment.
Just wanted to say hello, and I'm sure I will use this board to keep notes on my progress. Glad you are all here to share this journey!! :-#)

I just looked at your blog and my canines are actually much worse than yours. They are out of the gum, but they came out above the baby canines I had, so they still have to move all the way down. Since they are exposed, they look that much scarier. I think I will take a pic tomorrow.... I hope that it only takes a few months to get them somewhat down, the brackets are really irritating my mouth since they are so far up.
I had a dream last night that my front lower teeth fell out from the pressure of braces because my gums got soft. yuck!

Bracies Newbie too - 5 days so far....

Hi,

I'm new to braces also and very new to this type of forum! I have been reading everywhere that "normal" eating can resume in a few days, a week, never.....I was wondering how you were doing with that? Are you still on a soup/smoothie diet?

Also, was wondering if you have used the "wax" yet...any tips on how to use that? I have attempted to use it only to find that it comes right off!

How long do you have to wear your braces? I'm an adult as well and this has been quite a change for me. I'm actually questioning myself about my decision!

I am scheduled to be in braces anywhere from 8-14 months, depending on the movement I get with these canines. Today is the 1st day I haven't used wax on the canines, I have only put it in the back corners where the wires are a bit pokey, but not pokey enough to need to be cut. They are still uncomfortable to me and it hurts to eat and chew with much pressure. My molars are pretty short and I think that the brackets are hitting each other when I chew, and I am definitely going to ask about this problem when I get my 1st adjustment on april 21st. If the molar situation doesn't get better by then I will see if it's necessary to keep them braced.
It really does stink to have these things but it is the only way to fix my mouth and it will be worth it. How often will you be getting adjustments? I'm thinking the week following those will be the worst part of the month for me. Hang in there!!

My teeth are all cracky and ache if I touch them, I think this is a great sign! I haven't noticed any movement yet and I STILL haven't taken any pictures. I don't know if I will regret that or not at this point. I have had 2 back brackets fall off since I've been braced, I think that I clench my teeth at night. My molars are really small and the brackets hit each other easily. I am finally to the point where the braces aren't too uncomfortable, and I am glad they are on. I just CANNOT wait until I see a little movement in these canines.

Hi Sab!

Congratulations on getting braces! The time will go by fast and with each passing day the pain gets less and less.

When I first got my braces, I was biting brackets and my teeth were not touching. Within a few weeks, those problems disappeared.

Best of luck to you!

Thanks everyone!! I had my 2nd adjustment today with the addition of powerchains on my canines to bring these suckers down. I am so excited, but a little nervous too because the dentist asked if I wanted any painkillers. I said no for now, and I can call if I change my mind. I've only had them on for an hour so I don't feel uncomfortable yet, and I am going to eat all day in case my teeth are really in that much pain later. :)
