August 2010 Orthognathic Surgery patient(new)

#1 Post by Jessica37769 »

Hi, I am new here. I recieved my surgery date today, August 5. It took a while to recive the date and I was happy, but I have to say that I am feeling a little overwhelmed now. I have never researched the surgery, just know what the surgeon said. I guess I was scared. I am 23 with a 3 year old. I am having surgery on my upper jam. We are suppose to go on vacation August 22. I start my education program August 30. Will I be okay to do these things? The doctor said it should be fine, but I want some advice from people who have personal experience. Thanks for all the help.

Hi Jessica,

Everyone's recovery speed and experience will vary. For your vacation at 2.5 weeks after your surgery - it might not be the most enjoyable vacation ever, but I don't think you will have any major issues. I'm not sure if you will have any diet restrictions or if you will have a splint in, so talking and eating may be a bit of a chore. Also your energy level will still be somewhat low since you will still just be a few weeks out of surgery.

I had upper and lower jaw surgery. I was able to start work about a week and a half after my surgery - so you should be good to start your education program by 3.5 weeks after surgery.

I think the first week is really the tough part. The swelling and bruising combined with the after effects of anesthesia really make it uncomfortable to do much at all, including sleeping and eating. After that, it typically gets much easier.
