Question before I'm getting my invisalign next week

#1 Post by yliu4 »

My invisalign case would be getting 4 teeth taking out total next week (2 from upper jaw and 2 from lower). The doctors told me that they will install the invisalign the same day I will have my 4 teeth taking out, and I think they told me that I will have 36 sets for my upper jaw and 28 sets for my lower jaw. The entire process will take about a year and half.
Questions:
1) I do mountain biking a lot (more than 3 times a week, and 2~3 hours each). Will I still be able to do it?
2) I'm turning 21 soon, and it's easy to guess what will happen. What are things I should watch out for?
3) What are some of the most common life style changing people went through? I do not smoke or chew gums, I don't drink more than twice a month, and I'm not big on snacking between meals, so I'm just curious if there is anything else this treatment can throw at me.
4) I've heard that braces can cause personalities shift; has anyone or know anyone went through that?
5) This is my first day researching on invisalign, so anything that is good to know would be nice.

Contrats on getting started with treatment!

As for your questions:

1. Yes. Just stay hydrated and you should be fine. If you typically take a break for snacking when you're biking, you may want to take a toothbrush with you to give a quick cleaning before putting your aligners back in.

2. I'm not sure what you mean....

3. You may want to be prepared for dry mouth...and keep water with you wherever you go. Also, put together a kit with toothpaste/brush/floss and keep it with you, as well as your carrying case for your aligners. Get used to cleaning your teeth in public restrooms if you like to eat out alot.

4. Sorry, not sure what this means either.....other than I can be a little cranky the first day of a new tray.. :)

I would be afraid of starting this the same day as having teeth pulled, personally. You may want think about letting yourself heal a little first...but then again, I'm a wimp...lol.

Good luck!

Ahhhh - I kinda thought that's what you meant, but didn't want to speculate :).

I have been drinking whatever I want pretty much. I'm not encouraging anyone else to do that, but I'm a diet coke addict and, well, I'd rather risk a cavity than root-reabsortion from taking my trays out too often...so there ya go. I have had beer and light colored ocean. I've stayed away from anything to bright or dark colored and I do make sure to rinse my mouth out with water really often, like every other drink. I'm hoping the water, if not rinsing all the drink off of my teeth, is at least diluting it...lol.

I have been doing this since day one, and I had a dentist appointment around my 4th tray and had no problems, but of course that doesn't mean I won't develop any, I know.

I also haven't had any staining on my aligners....I took photos of a brand new never worn aligner and one that I had worn for 2 weeks already and there's not much difference in them. They are in my blog.

Anyway, hope this helps! Have fun!!

Questions:

Yes, I have found activities like that to be no problem, but I've found that sometimes I need more water than I would have needed before. Dry Mouth - urgh.
2) I'm turning 21 soon, and it's easy to guess what will happen. What are things I should watch out for?
Depends what risks you want to take. If you want to drink lots over several hours - you could go against advice and keep your aligners in - but make sure you drink water in between alcohol (good for you anyway, dehydration is bad!) and at the very first opportunity brush, floss and mouthwash your teeth and thoroughly clean the aligners.
3) What are some of the most common life style changing people went through?
For the first few days, I was totally useless at work. All I could think about was my mouth, literally. I couldn't concentrate on anything else. Write-off the first few days of this as a total waste of your life hehe. Now they remain on my mind more often than I'd like, but I am able to forget about them for long periods of time if I have something occupy my mind.
4) I've heard that braces can cause personalities shift; has anyone or know anyone went through that?
Never heard that theory myself. They might make you more self-conscious, although invisalign are barely noticeable so unlikely. Pain might make you grumpy, and might stop you sleeping and so cause associated problems.
5) This is my first day researching on invisalign, so anything that is good to know would be nice.
Time-tabled eating is a drag. Sometimes it would be cool to just decide I feel like eating a sandwich, go make it, eat it, and then sit watching the tv afterwards for as long as I feel like it. Sadly not allowed. Make sandwich - take aligners out - eat sandwich - floss in front of the tv - pause TV (love Sky+) - brush teeth and aligners - NOW you can veg in front of the TV as long as you like.

The whole thing is annoying, even after 4 weeks. But its a tolerable annoyance, and although I complain - it has become habit by now.
