Hi all,
Medically, I need braces and upper and lower jaw surgery to correct my bite and have my profile improved (by moving back my lower jaw and my upper jaw moved forward).
However, I'm 23 and don't want to wear braces for 2 years if im honest. I don't really think my bite is that bad, I have a slight underbite and a narrow top jaw (so I may need top jaw widening which im also not keen on) but I can easily deal with my bite.... Ive contacted a few private surgeons and they have said there are alternatives to improving your profile if you dont want to go through the whole route of jaw surgery...
I've been told to attend a consultation to discuss the options... Would I be correct in saying a reduction genioplasty would be a possibility? Ive seen some vids on youtube and it looks impressive, quick and a much better option for me. The perfect scneario if i had the money would be double jaw surgery, and then a sliding genioplasty to shorten my actual chin. But unfortunately I cant afford all of that!
Does anyone have any recommendations?

Hi BigJaw - My ortho also recommended that I have jaw surgery & braces. But personally I was not willing to go that far. Even though I know he preferred that I had the surgery.
I know the thought of getting braces is not fun/great. But I just did it again for the 2nd time, had them as a teen. Even though it's a hard adjustment at first, like everyone said, you get used to it. And the final outcome will be worth it. You're still young.
I don't think I answered your questions, but thought I'd just share my own experience of having the option of jaw surgery. Wishing you all the best on your decision.

I dont think there is anything wrong at all in having braces at 23, but its just not for me (i cant help the way I feel).
On top of that, I really don't want to see my face over the course of 18 months, become worse (in terms of appearance) whereby my lower teeth move forward and my bite becomes degraded compared to how it is now. I just dont want to put myself through it all.
This is why Im looking into the sliding genioplasty as a quick fix to my 'big jaw'. im sure it can be an alternative in 1 way or another???
