Ortho Chipped my tooth!

#1 Post by DevG »

Yesterday was the most awful ortho visit ever!

First of all I am 7 month pregnant, when my ortho reclined the chair back to look at my teeth the pressure from the baby and me leaning back cut off some blood flow or something and I nearly passed out!

Then I had to get a bracket repositioned on my front left tooth. I have ceramic brackets and my teeth are really sensitive, getting them removed hurts me like crazy! So I was nervous. I have to say it was not AS bad as I thought it would be but it still was uncomfortable.

Next I had to have some filing done between by front two teeth to make room for them to squeeze together, this is when my ortho chipped my tooth! He didn't say anything, and I didn't notice untill I got home and looked in the mirror. It's a very small chip but it is definitly noticable so I freaked out! I called him and he can't see me till monday. In the mean time I will see my regular dentist to see if he can repair it without filing it down (I have VERY small teeth already) I really don't want to file anything more.

I am also going to speak to my dentist about after treatment. My ortho is reccomending veneers for my tiny tiny teeth but they are so expensive and not covered by insurance here in BC (Canada) has anyone else had this issue with small teeth and had them fixed or "built up" in other ways that are just as good? I am very nervous, but when the ortho showed me what me tooth looked like without a bracket i was shocked at how small it was.

Sorry to hear about all this happening to you.

On a good note, if you have dental insurance it covers restoration of chipped teeth (with bonding). I chipped a tooth and was able to have it restored to better than it looked before the chip, my insurance paid in full.

Thanks, I made an appointment with my dentist for tomorrow I am hoping he will be able to fix it with bonding instead of filing it like he has in the past. I just don't want to make them any smaller than they are already. If they were longer I would have no issue.

Hi DevG. Sorry about your tooth. I also have small teeth, which I never noticed until the ortho said something. My ortho told me that she wants to have some bonding done when I'm finished with treatment. I've read on here that it looks just like the tooth and is much cheaper than veneers. Might be an option. I think it has to be touched up every 10 to 15 yrs but I think its the same for veneers too. You might want to check it out in the search engine.

Thank you so much! I will have a look. I am going to talk to my dentist about it on Wednesday when I go in about my chipped tooth. I will ask about bonding and I'll do some reserch before I go.

Thanks again!

What a horrible office visit! I don't know much about it, but I have seen before and after pics of gum recontouring, and the results can be amazing. You might want to do some online research on the subject and ask your ortho.
