Starting with Clearstep...
Hi all
After years of deliberation I have decided to go ahead with Clear braces!
I went for an initial consultation in November where the orthodontist offered me the choice of Invisalign or Clearstep, estimating that the treatment would take 9 months. I asked him what the differences were between them and insisted that they were exactly the same, except Clearstep was a UK based company and was roughly 25% cheaper (£1500-2000 cheaper in my case). I went away and did my own research on them but could hardly find anything on the net about Clearstep. In the end I opted to put my trust in the orthodontist and took the cheaper option of Clearstep.
I went back and he did all my xrays, moulds, photographs...etc and he sent them off to Clearstep. When my treatment plan came back from the lab I was told that it would take 18 months, not 9, and I would need two of my upper pre-molars extracted. The price also jumped up to £4500 from £2000-2500!!! I was shocked to say the least and so went away to think about it.
After more lengthy discussions with my ortho I decide to go ahead with it. He cut a deal with Clearstep so that I would only have to pay £3500 instead of the full amount, since he initially estimated it would only take 9 months. I had my two teeth removed and he ordered my aligners. I received the first box on Friday (04/02) and whilst I was at the dentist I had some bite raisers fitted (?!). They didn't explain to me exactly what these were for but they make it very difficult to eat as they limit the contact points between the arches. Imagine what it would be like to eat with only 2 back teeth and you'll get the idea! Besides that the actual aligners are excellent, they are very easy to insert/remove and nobody has noticed that I have them in. I cannot provide a comparison to Invisalign but from what I've seen on the net I'd say they are AS invisible or more so! I've included some photos below to illustrate...

I struggled to find any kind of comparison between Invisalign and Clearstep on the web so I hope this will help some people. From what I've learnt so far it appears that Clearstep use a variety of "invisible" orthodontics in order to achieve the best results. Instead of JUST using clear aligners like Invisalign do. Since I've had teeth extracted I will need to have some kind of closing screw fitted to close the gaps. I'm going to discuss this with my ortho when I get to that stage, as he also mentioned having "sectional fixed braces" fitted which I didn't like the sound of. After all, I opted for Clearstep because I wanted to correct my teeth without having traditional braces fitted. We'll see how that goes though!
If you have any questions please ask!

Hi clearstepguy!
Congrats on your decision and getting started! It took me years of procrastinating, so I think I can imagine what a big decision this was!
I was shocked to read that the original estimate and plan from the ortho and the outcome from the " clearsteppeople" had such a discrepancy between them...Was there a particular reason for that?
Anyway, good luck with all!

Hi Olivia!
To be completely honest, I'm not sure! When I went for my initial consultation the ortho said I had a mild case of over-crowding but when my report came back from Clearstep they diagnosed my teeth under the servere class. I'm not sure whether the ortho just got it completely wrong or was trying to give me a more desirable time frame to make me opt for the treatment. Either way, it's not too good! I have, however, read alot of gleaming reviews/testimonials about my current ortho so I'm not overly worried.
The review from Clearstep was very thorough and when my ortho asked if I could go ahead without the treatment without an extraction they said it wouldn't be possible. I'm assuming that they saw something in my impressions/x-rays that he didn't.
One thing I do regret is not getting a second opinion! I thought it would cost me alot more time and money so decided just to go with what I'd been told. :-S

Re: Starting with Clearstep...
I've never heard of this system before, but it sounds like some of the other clear aligner companies around.
You mention that your doctor underestimated treatment by about half and that he had to ask the aligner company about how treatment proceeds, whether extractions are required, etc. Find out if those behind Clearstep are orthodontists. Even at Invisalign, there are no orthodontists behind the technicians who produce ClinChecks.
Your doctor should be the one who is responsible for the diagnosis and the treatment plan. They are not simply conduits to purchase a product that will yield an end result. Your aligners are simply the appliances used to align the teeth. Ultimately, it is your doctor's skill and experience with the use of appliances that make the difference.

Re: Starting with Clearstep...
Thanks for the repsonse!
I'm under the impression that they use orthodontists in the labs but I'm not completely sure, so I'll try and find out.
It is worrying that he got it so wrong but at the time I assumed this happened because he hadn't anticipated me needing extractions. If I had kept all of my teeth and there had been room for movement perhaps this would have taken 9 months like he said. MY ortho has treated patients with Invisalign/Clearstep but I'm not sure of his level of experience.
Ps. Clearstep is a UK/European company that doesn't yet operate in the U.S.

That's my 3rd day over with at the office and nobody has noticed so far! Or if they have, they've not said anything.
Re: Starting with Clearstep...
Hi clearstepguy,
Glad to hear things are going well for you! I'm four days in now and I also think nobody had really noticed...or bothered to say anything about it...either way, works for me!

Suits me too!
Although, I think I may have aroused suspicion today as I started lisping quite a bit! Not sure why, as my speech has been fine up to now. I talked alot during my lunch break when my aligners were out so could be down to that.

To be honest, the bottom picture doesn't illustrate how discreet the aligners really are but it was the best I could do!

It's pretty discreet!
I think the titles should be reversed.. the bottom is with the aligner and the top without?
Looks good though!

Looks very discreet! You don't have any attachments? I have four, on my canines and premolars and the ones on my canines are quite visible I think (bit nobody else seems to really notice) They are there though and quite annoying.
By the way I think your teeth already look very nice now! They will look so beautiful when you are done!!

Thanks for the boy of confidence guys!
@ drgnchsr36
I Put them that way round on purpose!
@ Olivia
I haven't got any attachments yet but I'm supposed to be getting some with my next box of aligners. I believe on my canines too!

Re: Starting with Clearstep...
Well it's been 2 weeks, so thought I'd best give you an update!
So far everything has been fine. The aligners have been easy to put in and take out and they seem to clean up quite well. So far I've simply been using water and a soft bristle tooth brush to clean them and it seems to do the trick. One thing I've found though is that my aligners seem to be getting tighter as time goes by, not looser, has anyone every experienced this? I'm thinking it could be because I tend to "suck" them onto my teeth every so often, which has the effect of making them hug my teeth tighter, I'm not sure.
I was expecting to change my aligners every 2 weeks but the stand in orthodontist said I had to keep the first one in for 4 weeks, until my usual ortho came back to assess me. Does anyone know why this might be? I'm considering ringing my dentist on Monday to ask if I can change to my second aligner anyway, since 2 weeks has passed now.
Besides this the only annoying thing is having to slide off to the office bathroom everytime I want to eat something! I've been a bit naughty and stil drink coffee but I rinse out my aligners straight afterwards and they seem to be fine.

@ DrJasonKTam
I found out that they do use Orthodontists at Clearstep so that General Practioners can also use the system.
