Is it normal for my mouth to be so DRY?

#1 Post by Green~Tara »

Ever since I got braced one week ago, my mouth just feels so dry. I keep drinking water and swishing water around my teeth. Is this normal?

I used Breathsavers to help with the dry mouth. It really works, give it a try.

Yup, definitely normal. It gets a little better though. I just passed my three month mark with braces and my dry mouth has improved since the beginning. Drink TONS of water - it definitely helps. As suggested above, Breathsavers and lip balm help too. :)

Thanks everyone! I'll definitely pick up some Breathsavers, especially seeing as I can't grab a quick fresh-up with gum for awhile.

Get Biotene mouthwash. It's available online or usually at Target and drugstores. It's mouthwash for dry mouth that doesn't have alcohol (if I remember correctly) and has bioenzymes that help increase saliva in your mouth. Saliva is what helps keep plaque growth down so if you have dry mouth, you could be at risk for more cavities. The dry mouth is from your gum tissues stretching (called resorption) as your teeth are shifting.

I've tried ACT Total Care Dry Mouth, but I find that it leaves a really funny taste in my mouth. Do you have any problems like that with the Biotene? I think I may try it. :D

I've tried biotene, and it left my mouth feeling weird. I personally like Oasis. It's hard to find. I used to get it at CVS pharmacy, but now I order it online from somewhere like Drugstore.com

Wow, thanks for the updates on special mouthwashes, everyone. I certainly don't want placque and cavities in addition to these things!

So then it is normal for the gums to look weird? While flossing last night I noticed that my gums weren't gripping my teeth as usual and that they looked kind of white at the edges. I'm thinking from the teeth loosening and moving?

I am drinking tons of water too but then it feels like my brackets dry instantly and my lips stick to them when I try and talk! Awkward!!
