Re: any uk open biters?
Hi,
I'm from the UK and will be having surgery on the NHS for my open bite early next year. My braces went on in March! I can't wait for it to all be over with and have a nice set of pearly whites!

Hi,
I had an open bite and overjet too and have just been through surgery on the NHS. Only my back teeth touched before, post surgery more of my teeth touch but it's not perfect. It was successfull though and my jaw is in a much much better position. I'm still waiting to see what the orthos plans are now. Any Qs about the delights of having surgery on the NHS let me know

Yep - join the club! My open bite developed in my early twenties and I'm hopefully getting Lefort 1, BSSO and genio early next year, age 33. The NHS is slow to get going, but once you're in the system things do speed up. Annafaith - hope your recovery continues to go well.

Re: any uk open biters?
I'm at blackburn hospital up in Lancashire and hoping I don't randomly get shoved on a waiting list like so many other people do in england. They've never mentioned anything like that and in my first consult with my surgeon she said she would like to do my surgery in january if my teeth were ready! No I didn't have to have that test :S they never enquired as to what was the cause - I think mine is genetic anyway as my dad has issues with his jaw and so did his mum. (And his mum had all false teeth in her 50s which I do not want to risk by not getting something done about it!!!!)
I'm not sure what kind of movement needs to be done yet. They took out my bottom wisdom teeth in May in preparation for the op as they would be in the way. They've only said there is a 99% chance they will do the bottom aswell as the top. To be honest I really want them to, I think it needs doing. I've got a weak jaw line and my chin is a bit too far back. I think they'll need to though because as well as my open bite my top jaw is way over my bottom. I've had my braces on for 4 months and seeing amazing results already!
Hope everyone else is having a positive experience!

Re: any uk open biters?
Hi
Me too, I am in South East and have a severe open bite only 2 small contact points in my mouth. I think at my first appoinment they measured my open bite as 14mm!!
I have had braces for about 9-10 months now and have noticed huge differences but have a way to go yet. I will need Le Fort I and BSSO, having said that there are no local surgeons working on the nhs so i might be in for a significant wait..... not even on the list yet. I was told at the last count about 3 months ago the waiting list had 75 surgery ready patients and nobody doing them so the list is only getting bigger so far.

Re: any uk open biters?
@Emmauk - I had surgery in the south east with an excellent maxfac consultant who does a LOT of jaw surgery cases. The hospital I went to also specialises in training maxfac doctors so it's a good place to go. I think he's got a long waiting list but it can't hurt to try and get a referral, and see if it's any quicker? I'll message you details if you're interested, don't really want to put them on here. x

Re: any uk open biters?
Im in the East (Bucks) and luckily my local hospital also have a joint orthodontic and maxillofacial department, took just over a year from my first appointment to then finally getting the go ahead from the PCT, and then have just had top front brace on last Thursday with the rest due for next week. Been told looking at end of next year for the operation but obviously depends on how teeth movements goes. I have an underbite, openbite and i think it also looks like top jaw is slightly angled but taking one step at a time as what they will have planned could change by then although surgeon did say looking at top and bottom surgery. All being done on the NHS thankfully as no way could I ever of afforded this on own. At the joint meeting with both my ortho and surgeon, I was told was I am nearing surgery ready, being as they work together, that if there is anything more than a six week wait for a date, that they will book in me once pretty much ready but the surgeon doesn't seem to have anyone waiting more than 2-5 weeks once ready, so from reading some other's on the NHS seems I may (hopefully) be a little lucky re time scales and not having to wait months for a date.

Re: any uk open biters?
I also have an open bite and overbite and have had braces since Dec of 09 but I had to wait two years to start my treatment. My surgery is going to be probably February next year and it's on the NHS. I go to the Princess Royal in East Grinstead in East Sussex, and they are telling me now that surgeons there are booking through January, so that might be of use to other South-East types
