Hi, I wonder if anyone can input their experience of numbness after surgery. I've just gone two weeks post op, and still have a numb patch on the right side of my chin and lower lip. It's numb to the touch, but I do get some sensations if I run my finger over that area; it's hard to describe, but it's a mild deep pressure like sensation. The thing that's bothering me most is, at rest, I get an almost constant stinging slow throbbing kind of sensation over my chin, in the same place, which is quite uncomfortable. My lip also feels like it is burning a little, and is sore, although still numb.
I understand that the nerves that run to this area take a longer time to heal, and I should expect to start regaining feeling in the 6 month to 1 year mark. What I wanted to know was whether other people have these kind of sensations in numb areas, and how these progressed. If you had these sensations, were they a precursor to getting feeling back? If you still have numbness, do you still get these kind of sensations?

Hello. Sorry to hear about the strange sensations you are experiencing. What surgery did you have?

Actually, that sounds like you're recovering very well. I have partial numbness at 6 months, left side of the chin and left side of the lower lip, but never had the throbbing, etc.
I would be optimistic as long as you're feeling anything there, even if it's annoying. If you're only 18 days post-op, that's really no time at all for all nerve recovery.

I am almost 3 months post off. I went through the stinging/burning phase, it will go away and be replaced by the tingle to the touch phase. I can finally feel my lower lip although it is still quite numb. My chin (I had a genio) is taking the longest, still quit numb and tight. Apparently I had a muscle stitched to the bone. The sensations change from week to week. Hope this helps!

@bullfighter - thanks, I keep reminding myself it's less than a week since I had my genio re-done and that I need to be patient. Time goes sooo slooowly when you're recovering. Hoping to go back to work soon.
@aussiere - that's really encouraging, thanks! My genio also feels tight and hard, not sure if that's the numbness, or the metal plates that are in there. I imagine that it also takes a long time for the soft tissue to accomodate the change of underlying bones moving position. Hopefully in time it adjusts and feels more relaxed.
There's a very small mm sized area on my right lip which I found today that I can sort of feel - I'm clinging to this piece of hope
