1 cm overjet with a slight openbite

Hi, I'm wondering if anyone has had an overjet anywhere near 1 cm. What did you do as far as treatment goes? What were your results? I was told by my orthodontist that I would need jaw surgery but I would rather opt for braces since surgery is extremely invasive and I'm not even sure I could get it covered by insurance. Looking at the x-rays, I can see that if my teeth were completely straight along my jaw that there would be somewhat of a decrease in the space between my upper and lower teeth, but it's mostly jaw alignment that's the problem. I'm 22, by the way.
