IPR--need to know...
I am having IPR in a couple of weeks. I don't know if it will be on my top or bottom teeth. I am afraid it will hurt, that my sensitive teeth are going to scream. I don't like dental tools that make noise either--like grinding. I'm also worried about how big the gaps will be.
Please respond if you've had IPR--I really don't know much about it, but I'm starting to get nervous.

Re: IPR--need to know...
I had it done two weeks ago. I was so nervous I was shaking in the chair and the ortho was like you'll be fine!!
Truth is...
It didn't hurt at all! Mine was all done on the bottom and they used a high speed drill and lots of water spraying at the tooth during, so there isn't a lot of friction/heat built up. After she did the drill part she used a strip of sandpaper like stuff to kinda buff the teeth. The gaps feel weird at first but then you get used to them and then they close up and you don't even notice. They do go way down close to the gum line and it can be scary but just hold still and keep your eyes closed and breathe through your nose. It will be over with soon enough.
I still have two more teeth on the bottom that she needs to do but i had to wear spacers between them before she could do the IPR. So tomorrow I have them done and i'm not scared at all going back!
Don't fret, it will be ok.

It doesn't hurt but the rasping is unpleasant; especially when they use the sandpaper strips. I much prefer the drill attachment to the sandpaper.

It's not too bad. I almost cry getting my teeth cleaned and I was able to handle this OK. She put a numbing spray on my gums so I wouldn't feel vibration.

I'm in the same boat klobird.... IPR is in my treatment plan too...
I'm sure it will not be as bad as we think. You know us, we (at least me ) tend to over think these things
Good luck!

I had it done about a year ago and was scared as well. It turned out to be no big deal, it smelled and tasted pretty bad though.
Re: IPR--need to know...
I've had it done twice. I have very sensitive bottom teeth. The first time the assistant put this numbing cream stuff on them. It may have helped some. The 2nd time, I'd been in braces for awhile, and I didn't know the IPR was coming, so no numbing cream. It didn't really hurt at all. Is it uncomfortable? - oh yeah. Nasty experience. But it doesn't last very long. Your teeth may be sensitive afterwards, so stay away from citrus foods and drinks.

Thanks you guys--I think I will be honest with them before they start...I have to have nitrous just to get my teeth cleaned. My dentist is cool with that. The difference is that they never have used anything that makes noise on me at the ortho's. It's always just been kind of mechanical--not the same as at the dentist's--except for this time!!
OK--I'm going to trust you guys!!
(And Eb--8 months!!!! You go girl!! )

Re: IPR--need to know...
If you read my 1st adjustment post, I talk about it there.
My ortho did it with a drill bit attachment, he said it can be done by hand but it is quicker to do it with the drill. He showed me the attachment and it looked like a miniature hacksaw
I will be honest, it's not painful but it is a feeling unlike any other, it is like something is buzzing inside your head. So all though not painful, it isnt a pleasant experience, but saying that it is over very very quickly.
My gaps were incredibly small and closed v quickly probably within 48 hours.

Yeah, I know klobird… Did you ever believe that I would managed to go this far? Just a few more months and it has been a year! Where did the time go?
When Eric mentioned IPR I told him that I would need some "valium" on that appointment. He laughed, so I guess "valium" is not an option (I have never taken drugs like that before, not even when I go my braces on even though it prob. was needed that day Poor Eric )
Ps. I still have your stuff, I have just been super slow to send it… I need one last thing and then I will send it (hoping for next week).
