Molar bands
Ok, this may be totally wrong, but here is my question. I was talking to a friend of mine and he said that when he had braces (10 years ago) that when they put on the molar bands he had to bite down on them to get them in place, and literally pushed them into his gums. He said it was extremely painful. Is this still how they do it today? I know a lot of people say that getting your braces put on doesnt hurt at all, but didnt know if this was still a common practice. I am just wondering so I know what to expect when I have mine put on. Any advice on this would be appreciated.
Re: Molar bands
I did this 12 years ago, and it was a royal pain. My Molars are beat up, some have root canals, some need root canals, and arent in the best of shape, so not looking forward to doing it again, yet I am next month. My only suggestion is blush and floss and clean the heck out of your molar gums before going in. Get them in the best possible shape as you can. Oh, and take ibuprofen before hand.. And maybe a shot or two of whiskey.
(kidding on the whiskey.. sorta.)

So OF, just wondering...before you go in what are you going to do, tell yourself how handsome you are? Compliment yourself on your awesome clothing? Just exactly how do you blush first before going in? [ducking]
Re: Molar bands
lol. I probably will be blushing as I am embarrassed to be doing it again.

I had mine put in eleven months ago, they used a tool like a hammer to help place it in there and if that didnt work I would bite down. I wouldnt say its painful but it was uncomfortable for the first week. Hope that helps :)

Re: Molar bands
I had to bite down too... Had mine put in June 2012.
They used a funny looking hammer tool to push it up around the tooth...And they told me to bite down to ensure that it went up and no part was preventing my teeth from meeting.
It didnt hurt...It felt strange (like something is stuck between your teeth)
But that feeling went away after a few minutes.
When they had to remove it to put the glue, i forgot i had them on.

Re: Molar bands
You won't necessarily have molar bands, not all braces need them.

Re: Molar bands
Hi,
I had mine put on in July 2012 and had to bite down while they use this mini hammer looking instrument. My teeth were so stubborn on the bottom that I had to wait almost 3 weeks for the spacers to make room to be able to get them on comfortably. The top ones went on easy because they moved with the week with the spacers. My suggestion is to just take some aleve or ibuprofen before you go in and you should be ok.

Re: Molar bands
i got my molar bands Friday, 15 days after being braced. I had to have them because all 8 of my back molars are crowns and the brackets don't stay glued so well. Anyway, it is just a little discomfort when they are fitting them- just a lot of pushing and biting down. They just used a pushing instrument, no hammer......and afterwards just a little getting used to all the extra metal in your mouth. There is now A LOT of extra metal for food to get stuck in now, my daughter does not have molar bands, just brackets on every tooth.
Upper and lower metals-
Brace date- Dec 19,2012
Treatment- anterior left open bite, overjet, lower crowding, jaw dysfunction, some upper canine rotation
Age- 42
