Yes, it's the million-dollar oral sex question again

#1 Post by allthatglitters »

I'm sure I saw a few past threads on this a few months ago, but they now seem to be very difficult to search for. So, apologies for possible repetition but I'm kind of out of options.

So yes, I'm hoping to take the plunge soon and I'm pretty set on the idea of ceramic braces from everything I've heard. However, like many I am just a teeny bit concerned about how oral sex is going to work (I'm a straight female). I've heard that if I take things slowly I can master the technique of completely covering my teeth, but what I've heard far less about is how performing oral sex will affect my teeth's progress. Considering they say that sucking on things is one of the main causes of overbites in the first place. Ahem.

Yes, I have a long term boyfriend who would totally understand, but two years or so without one of our favourite activities? Say it ain't so!

Go slow, go easy. I'm married...have been married forever. There was no way we were going to do without for the next 15 months! I have ceramic on top and metal on the bottom. We haven't had any real problems at all. I remember to keep my teeth away from things and he remembers not to make any quick moves :)
Braces off on 8/26/14 after a year!

OK WiredOldLady, that's good to know.

Leebie, I'm actually thinking more along the lines of any potential aggravations it could indirectly cause my overbite rather than any, erm, teeth-schlong interface.

ahhh lol.. no, it's not a problem at all :) Only issue is loose hairs potentially getting stuck in brackets (not attached hairs though) *vomits*

I think the sucking only becomes an issue for your treatment if it's as often as a thumbsucker would suck their thumb :)

 I need a better laughing smiley... I found this really funny

And I would agree... I doubt it'll affect your treatment. I'd be more worried more about hair in the brackets *shudders*

Well, let's hope you don't have to get the bite block thingies that I have glued to the back of my 2 top front teeth! They are basically triangles stick off the back of my teeth that would definately do some scraping damage. It's been 7 months so sorry husband! I think I might get them off soon (maybe even tomorrow!) so umm maybe then? ha

BTW that hair in the bracket made me crack up and feel creeped out all at once!

No problems here and about 7 months into treatment. I just put wax on the back molar bands to be safe. I can't do it for a couple of days after an adjustment but other than that, we're good. Just go slow & be careful til you get the hang of it. And it is pretty hilarious when something happens spontaneously after I've already put in my bedtime elastics. I just laugh and throw them on the night stand then grab another set after. If you're both brave and have a sense of humor, you'll be fine. Thanks for asking the question. I looked at every post about it before the braces went on because I was concerned.

Something like thumbsucking, which lasts for hours, would be bad. A little bit of "recreational activity" for a little bit won't be an issue.

But yeah, ask your partner to "trim" short or it could get uncomfortable for both of you. Youch! for your partner, ick! for you.

I have lingual braces, and when I brought this up to my husband the other day, he was like, "um, I'll just go without, thanks!". Then I reminded him that I'm supposed to have braces for two full years. His reaction:

 :( :-+

I'm sure that we'll give it the ol' college try at some point, but right now I'm still just trying to master being able to speak, and I don't have the energy to figure out how to deal with something else crammed into my mouth.

Thanks for asking, ive been wondering about this myself but haven't been brave enough to ask the ortho staff.

Does anyone have advice about oral when you have an expander? I have a fixed palatal expander, it goes on the roof of your mouth. So far ive just avoided pushing anything back to far.

I don't see how braces on the front of the teeth would really affect what is going on the inside of your teeth. My girlfriend just got braces put on a week ago, and we haven't done anything like that cause shes been really sick. But hopefully i'll be able to let you know if anything goes wrong soon!

She'll do fine! Just tell her practice makes perfect :gavel: .

I may be in the minority with my response, but I have an underbite and as my teeth have straightened and pulled forward (the bottom were leaning back trying to touch the top), I just can't imagine it would be comfortable. I told my husband that I would just rather not and he had no problem with that. I personally don't feel like our sex life has suffered at all and I'm four months in.
