Filing teeth while I have three months left in my treatment?

#1 Post by bellbell »

So I just went for an adjustment earlier and my ortho said he will file/even out my front teeth (the bottom part) during the next appointment since one front tooth has dented edge. Now that I am approaching the end of my treatment (three more months left-- fingers crossed), I am wondering if this is what people usually do... I thought filing teeth, especially the bottom edge, is done after/right before braces are taken off.

Every ortho and patient are diffferent but I can tell you mine is being done closer to the end than the beginning. She's been watching the progress to decide the best time to do it. Her philosophy is to have the wires do their work first because once she files, she can't get back enamel that's been taken down. For my case, waiting was a better option as the filing is for cosmetic purpose to even out the incisors on the bottom. I didn't need the space for movement. She wants me in my final wire for at least 6 weeks before she does it. Final wire went on during my last adjustment so we'll see what she thinks on the next visit.
