Tomato Juice and braces

#1 Post by butlerbulldogfan »

Hope no one laughs or thinks its a crazy question. But have any of you eat like chilli with tomato juice and not have a problem with brackets popping off due to the acidity of the tomato juice. Can tomato juice cause that. When I first got my braces I had brackets popping off and either was a coincindence or they just stopped popping off on their own, when I quit eating chilli didnt have anymore problems. I read applesauce is even more acidic then tomato juice, dont know how, but I eat that alot. Ive refrained from eating chilli for over a year and craving it bad now and afraid to eat it lol.

While I imagine gargling with battery acid might cause some damage (and your braces will be the least of your worries!) drinking tomato juice will not cause brackets to de-bond. Brackets are held on by a cement that makes itself a part of your tooth enamel. Any number of factors can cause a de-bond (improper prep, mechanical force, contamination during bonding, etc.) but I'm pretty sure tomato juice ain't on the list.

(I only had a single de-bond during my time in braces, and I drink V-8 most mornings.)

Another part in popping brackets off is the make up of your teeth. I think some folks tooth enamel is slightly different than others making them predisposed to having brackets come off. Having previous dental work like root canals or veneers won't let the glue bond as well as real teeth.

I don't recall ever having a bracket come off during my first round of braces decades ago. And I haven't had any come lose this time either. I'm conscious of them and try to stay away from biting directly into things; but sometimes it just happens.
Round 3 (lifetime) Damon stainless applied 3/16/20 (after 4 weeks attempting invisalign) On for about 18 months
Night time elastics with invisalign retainers; still...
Double jaw surgery was 6/18/15...
Orthodontics never really ends...
I'm emphatically against extraction orthodontics!

Yea the ones that kept popping off were on crowns. But probably a combo of the crown itself and pressure on the brackets when first getting braces on from the movement. Its been about a year since had one come off except a couple the ortho has popped trying get wire out.
