Hello everyone!!! I am going to my first consultation this Friday September 26, 2014 at 8am. I've been to two different consultations already because I like to shop around. I have a question....how long after your first consultation do the braces actually go on? I am pretty sure I am going to go with this ortho for treatment and would like to get started that day. I am soooo ready for this. I don't want to hide my smile not one more day.

Hi, I had my first consultation in August and had braces fitted in December. They need to leave you time to make sure you're happy with their proposal and then take X-rays and make models etc which can take a while.

Oh wow...I didn't think it would take so long. I was hoping to have the braces on within two weeks of the consultation. Thanks for the info.

You can get your records done the same day as your consultation if you're sure that the ortho and plan is the right one for you. Then you'll have to schedule a 'spacers' appointment (unless your ortho says for some reason you don't need spacers), which they usually keep them in for a week/sometimes 3 or 4 days at the minimum. After this appointment you make your braces installation appointment.
It really depends on how busy the office is and how busy your schedule is.

From first consultation to braces going on was 5 months for me. (We had to take care of some TMJD issues before braces went on though.)

Different practices have different policies. If you are ready to sign on the dotted line the day of your consult, it's pretty common to get your "records" done that day. ("Records" usually means a series of photos, a set of impressions, a panorex, and frontal and lateral cephalograms.) You usually won't get your braces the same day, if for no other reason than the ortho is unlikely to have a hole that large in his/her schedule to put them on.

If you don't sign that day, you will make an appt. for records and/or fitting. You may be able to do records and fitting in one day, but this may not be possible. (The ortho may have to order parts, or your ortho may use the "template" method to place the brackets, which requires completed models.)

I had my records done the day of the consultation, and then made an appointment for 3 weeks out mostly to accomodate my schedule which was fairly full at the time. The bracing appointment was fairly short, in retrospect. I was expecting something more dramatic to include something similar to a preop routine (I'm a nurse) but it was fairly straight forward and fast. I imagine they don't want you to have too much time to ponder how they are reengineering your mouth.

I had a quick consultation, then back for records appointment a week later and the final consultation/plan of action 2 weeks after that because I had a business trip in between. I could have gotten my braces 2 days later ( I think there was a cancellation), but that appointment didn't fit with my schedule. So, it ended up being about 2 weeks later. So, my braces were on about 5 weeks from first meeting the ortho I chose to go with. Like djspeece, it was mostly my schedule causing the delay. Good luck with getting your braces on quickly!!!

I had the option of getting my braces on the next day. But again scheduling issues on my end and I got them on exactly one week later. Eat up!!

Every place is slightly different based on scheduling, planning, and your own timeline. I had my consultation and records done on the 11th and braces were scheduled to go on the 28th (July 2013). So about 2.5 weeks. I ended up cancelling the install date and got my braces 6-7 weeks after my original consultation.

Like everyone else said, it really just depends.

Me: 6 months (had SARPE surgery in between, hence the delay)
My sister, who goes to the same ortho: exactly 3 weeks from her consultation.

For me, it was just 2 days. My consultation was June 25 and my braces went on June 27. It will depend on your ortho. Mine only does bonding appointments in the mornings on certain days. They just happened to have an opening, otherwise my next option would have been 2 weeks later.
