Displaced Upper Canines & Removal of 3 Premolars for Space

#1 Post by SimMermaid »

I am 27 and I have recently decided to see an orthodontist for my crowding issues and for my jaw popping. My regular dentist referred me and shortly thereafter my life changed as I know it. I have my upper canines where my gums are hidden under my upper lips and they have been there since I was about 12. My orthodontist recommended that I have 3 of my pre molars removed to make space for them to drop into place (2 up top and 1 below). I don't do well at the dentist and having these extractions done scares me a bit, since the last time I had any extractions done they were my wisdom teeth at 17. They didn't come out easily, and I was in a lot of pain afterward since they had to break them into four pieces because they were horizontal in my jaw and never erupted properly. I have had my consultation visit but I have not yet gotten my appointment to get the proverbial ball rolling. I will first need to have my 3 teeth removed then the orthodontist will evaluate my mouth again and attach the braces. He also wants to put a (I think) palatal arch to help pull the canines down and settle properly into their new spot. I have the evaluation photos and ex-ray but that will have to wait until I am a full member. Any advice and tips to help me through this would be great.
