Anyone NOT get surgery?

#1 Post by Lala082008 »

So I've been braced (Invisalign actually) for about 6 weeks now. I've got a pretty serious overbite (9mm) and overjet (7mm), and the orthodontist and oral surgeon agree that to get the best result I need lower jaw surgery. I've also got have a class II malocclusion, so my top and bottom teeth don't line up. I decided at the outset that I was going to go forward with the surgery, and my ortho told me that if I don't end up getting the surgery (like if insurance declines to pay) I will be WAY behind in the treatment, since the things he has to do to get me ready for the surgery are in many ways the opposite of what he would do if I chose no surgery.

The more I think about the jaw surgery and how I will fit it into my busy life (including trying to have kids and go back to school), the more I feel like it doesn't make sense to have it. Jaw surgery is also a major surgery, and I'm not someone who is debilitated by jaw problem. True I'm not happy with my profile or my bite issues, and these are the main reasons I originally decided to have the surgery, but I think that Invisalign alone can correct a lot of my bite problems. And I guess I would just live with not loving my profile/weaker chin (which is what I've done since it was pointed out to me as a teen).

I'm posting this here because I'm wondering if there are others out there who have struggled with whether to get surgery and eventually decided not to have surgery. Do you regret not getting the surgery or are you happy with the decision? Of course I know only I can make this decision, but I've found a lot of helpful advice on this board before and would really appreciate any feedback you might have.

Search on the many posts from sirwired who also underwent surgery successfully. You'll get a lot of good insight. Best of luck to you.

It is interesting that your ortho chose invisalign instead of traditional braces to make the pre-surgery adjustments. Obviously there are bite issues if you need surgery and for the most part invisalign is merely straightening teeth without completely correcting existing bite problems. Sure, your bite may improve but I don't think they can get the type of movement and alignment you can achieve with braces. Just curious.
