just got braces

#1 Post by jjtimken »

i just got braces for the first time yesterday, i'm 34. i have some teeth missing on the top and he wanted to remove 2 teeth on the bottom to make space for the crowing down there. i asked him if we could try to make space instead and if that fails fall back on removing 2 teeth as i don't want my jaw to shrink any. ( i got 5 springs installed at the moment to try and make space for everything ) i have a slight overbite already and i really don't want my chin to move back. i'm not sure now if i should have just had him remove the 2 teeth to start with or if my fear of my jaw shrinking was even justified. i never told him that was part of why i wanted to keep my teeth. what do you think ?

on a 2nd note to this i didn't expect quite as much pain as i had right after they were put on. i almost called to have them removed in the middle of the night but i know deep down that it's better if they stay.
i'm paid in full already but i wonder if you can ask an orthodontist to not remove them early unless there is a medical issue involved so that you can't ask to get them removed due to pain that is only temporary. ( i say this while the pain is under control knowing that it won't stay this way forever )

I would think it's better to keep your teeth if you can. If your ortho has agreed then I would think it's worth a shot? If your not happy then you can always have them extracted, but having them out and not being happy would be worse!

The first few days are the worse but it will definitely get better! Once your mouth starts adjusting the pain will start to go away just stick to soft foods and add more things in as you feel ready. I kept taking pain killers the first few days before food to ease it and salt water rinses also helped. Good luck! It will be worth it!

I took ibuprofen round the clock for nearly a week, so hang in there! Now the pain is just for a day when I have an adjustment, everything else is just pressure.
Braces for 18 months/4 days.

the pressure i can handle .. at the moment i'm taking naproxen and that is helping .. except i'm having to hold my mouth slightly open . relaxing my jaw so the upper and lower teeth touch just hurts... but on the up side as long as i don't let them touch it doesn't hurt !
