Where should I start? ( need some advice )

#1 Post by Dayymo »

My dental back story ---> Hello my name is Dayymo (not actually :P) I am 18 years old and I have absolute terrible teeth. This all started from a young age at around 8 years old I chipped one of my teeth on a fence. Around 2 years later when I was 10 I was at a pool (one with waves) and I tried to climb something when the waves were on and I was not strong enough to pull my self up and eventually slipped and the main impact was my front tooth on the right side. My teeth were never dealt with because dental is expensive and my parents could not afford it. So basically I grew up with chipped and crooked teeth. Now it Is 2016 and the last time I went to a dentist was in December of 2011 when I was in grade 9. I have been saving for braces for about 6 months ( part time job and sitting at 5500 dollars at the moment) and I feel like I am getting close to the amount to cover pre work and pay in full for braces. I only want full metal because I do not care what they look like. I have no I sea where to start So I have a few questions...

-anyone with full metal braces how much did they cost

-Who do I go to first a orthodontist or a dentist?

- Is there any major difference between the type of braces other then how they look?

- will I have to get my wisdom teeth extracted (I have one that surfaced and you can see) not sure about any other but just a question so I can be prepared)

- does the cost of braces cover the check ups afterwards as well such as tightening etc...

- average cost of getting some teeth pulled

I am very new to this forum so sorry if some of these are answered I am not too sure where to look.

Thanks to everyone taking the time to look at this and answer. I will update you on my journey to braces and will be an active member of this forum :)

-anyone with full metal braces how much did they cost

--- Every treatment, and every Orth is different on cost. Somewhere between $6000-$8000 is average.

-Who do I go to first a orthodontist or a dentist?

---- Dentist definitely. Need to get all cavities filled, and teeth cleaned before an ortho will even consider braces.

- Is there any major difference between the type of braces other then how they look?

---- Metal/Ceramic is a big discussion in another thread.

- will I have to get my wisdom teeth extracted (I have one that surfaced and you can see) not sure about any other but just a question so I can be prepared)

--- No way of knowing without xrays, i would expect it though.

- does the cost of braces cover the check ups afterwards as well such as tightening etc...

--- Yes, and normally a set of retainers afterwards/

- average cost of getting some teeth pulled

--- Depends on insurance/dentist/what else needs to be done (local vs general anesthetic).

First of all congratulations on your decision and determination. I wish I'd had that kind of discipline when I was your age. As already suggested, seeing a dentist should be your first step. That should get the ball rolling. Your dentist will probably recommend an orthodontist but you can also set up a few appointments with a few different orthos and go with the one you like the most. Yes the cost covers everything and in most cases you don't need to pay the full amount up front. Usually it's monthly payments. Good luck!

In order of 1st to last question

1. $6000 in total is what I'm paying for a full set of Metal Damon Braces.

2. Outstanding dental work comes before Orthodontics, so see a dentist first and you can even ask the dentist for a reference to an Orthodontist.

3. Non-metal braces sometimes have longer treatment times and the less obvious looking options can sometimes stain.

4. It might be necessary before or after braces to get your wisdom teeth removed, when you see a dentist and get an X-ray done, If they don't tell you, ask.

5. It usually covers everything, even emergency appointments and retainers.

6. I would say anywhere from ~100 to ~600 (teeth that are already fully grown in would cost on the low end, wisdom teeth still under your gums would cost on the high side).

Congratulations on deciding to get braces, you won't regret it.
Lots of crimes here

1. The upper molars bite too far ahead of the lower molars

2. Missing teeth #s 9, 14, and, 29

3. Open bite

4. Upper midline left of center

5. Lower midline right of center

6. Upper and lower teeth not straight

Sentence - 24 months, turned to 27 month.

Braces removed since 11/06/17
