Not sure what to do -- Remove braces?

#1 Post by kmz2016 »

Hi all:

I've been in Damon Clear Ceramic Braces for almost 4 months now, so not too long. I just found out that I will be moving out of state in 2 months (early March) and I won't have the same dental insurance coverage after I move (no orthodontic coverage). I'm also getting married in 3 months (April), and would prefer to not have braces on the actual day of wedding. I'm trying to decided what to do..

So far, I've checked several non-employer dental plans and haven't found anything with ortho coverage. I'm thinking of asking the doctor to remove my braces and give me a retainer? I'm thinking this will give me time to shop for a plan and new orthodontist, and maybe switch over to Invisalign if I'm going to have to pay out-of-pocket anyway.

Thoughts or suggestions? Has anyone quit treatment this early and requested a retainer? Or quite braces 4-6 months in and done Invisalign instead?

I don't fit the criteria for having braces removed early, but I don't know if I would invest in a retainer only after four months of treatment; but that would be a good question for your ortho. The other question would be to determine if you even are a good candidate for Invisalign; not everyone is, of course. I assume your wedding plans were made after the braces were applied because otherwise you would have realized you would indeed be braced on your big day. Also, I would recommend to read your contract to determine what your costs will be if you terminate. I doubt you could just walk away, but who knows. It seems most insurance does not include orthodontics from what I am reading on this forum (I assume you have looked into your spouse's coverage) so out of pocket may be inevitable. And of course, you doubtless are researching orthodontists at your new location -- that may have some impact on treatment options as well. Best of luck to you and congratulations on your upcoming wedding!

I had by brace taken off on Tuesday (3 months in), I had some work issues with redundancy threat, and really didn't want to be going to job interviews as an adult feeling self conscious of the metal. (I'm in England which is a bit more conservative than the states)

The front teeth looked 95% better than they did, I just have a black triangle between 2 of the teeth which I'm hoping to get filled.

I've had a bonded retainer fitted and go and collect my essix on tuesday.

I wish it could have continued longer, but having to been to one interview this week, and have another 2 lined up over the next few weeks, I know I made the right decision for me.

Did your orthodontist charge you for removing the braces early? If so how much and how was the cost determined?
