Braces without brackets on front teeth

Hi everyone. So my boyfriend got braces like a month ago. I notice 4 of his front teeth do not have brackets and there are just arch wire going through. The doc says he will be done in a year.. but im a bit worried. The 4 teeth are not straight enough but why r there no brackets?

Please ask the ortho what he plans to do. Your boyfriend should have been informed before undergoing treatment.

He said its to expand the teeth.. i tried to look up expander and nope it doesnt look like his braces.. :(
